The knee brace I was in for a lot of high school was four wide velcro strips, and what felt like steel boning on either side of the knee and a hole for the kneecap. Getting it on over jeans and having it stay in place was a constant struggle. I'm imagining the one you were in was roughly the same and I'm glad they're better-designed now.
