I've pretty much decided I want the instant gratification (yeah, I'm an American) so I'm going to try and go for the computer later this summer.

And man is the possibility getting expensive. ;-p

I would like, as much as possible, to make the switch over as complete as possible. While I will still have the PC desktop, I'd rather be all hooked up on the iBook. Now, the new ones come with a Mail program, and Quicken, and [livejournal.com profile] lioncub's copy of MS Office gives us three licenses, so I'm good to go on all those, but I'll need to get an HTML Editor (I'm thinking of getting Dreamweaver MX 2004 to replace the ancient Corel WebMaster Suite [which Corel doesn't even list on their web site or FAQs any more, it's that old!] that I use on my PC).

My webcam is compatible with the Mac, as is the Logitech trackball I use as my normal pointing device, and I'll assume the speakers as well since those are standard, if I care to use speakers.

Then on the game front I lucked out in that my copies of Diablo II and Diablo II: Lord of Destruction are both Mac CDs as well as MS Windows CDs (yay!). Will still mean at least replacing Civ3 (though it appears they do NOT make Mac versions of the two expansion packs yet *grumble*).

So, minimum of $1200 for the computer with the stuff I want/need (more HD space, Bluetooth and WiFi), $99 for Dreamweaver, $40 for Civ 3 (which, honestly, can wait), plus taxes and all that jazz. So, $1300 plus about 5% in taxes = $1,365. Eeck.

The sticker shock is partly because I've never bought a complete system before - I've always put my own computers together which can be cheaper, depending on how it's done and how much you can borrow from the previous beast. Plus it's a laptop, which is generally more expensive anyway.

But I still want to make the switch over. So, budget, budget, budget. And hope nothing too unexpectedly expensive comes up between now and then.

Good to know! Now to find out from our information-manager types how easy it is to access my work intranet from home...

Thanks!

Also, is there a Mac version of the PC right-click button? I've gotten really used to that....

Well, sort of. If you hold down the click, you get a menu of options... it has taken some getting used to for me though.

That's cool, that's exactly the sort of thing I'm looking for but couldn't figure out whether it existed. Thanks again!

What [livejournal.com profile] lioncub said, and you can Ctrl-click to get the pop-up menu immediately, instead of waiting the 2? second delay. I'll also note that it can depend on the application. If you go with X Windows on OS X, the Ctrl, Option, and Command modifiers work too. For example, xterm uses Ctrl-{Left,Center,Right}MouseButton for its menus, which are available via Ctrl-Mouse, Ctrl-Opt-Mouse, and Ctrl-Cmd-Mouse respectively.

Yes! Ctrl-click is even more what I'm looking for! Thanks!

Check out a preference pane called Sidetrack (http://www.ragingmenace.com/software/sidetrack/index.html).

I always use the trackpad tap to click on things, so I use Sidetrack to use the trackpad button as a right-click to get my contextual menus. Sidetrack also lets me define a narrow band at the right of my trackpad to use as a scroll wheel.

Thanks! I like having the trackpad tap as well, so sidetrack would be really helpful.
