Sudafed-inspired dream this morning. I was a teacher, university level, leading the first day of an advanced Latin translation course. I remember going on at length about how we were going to cover a variety of short works with an emphasis on getting a good English translation. No pop quizes, because the business of translation seldom works that way, at least for Latin, just translations. I also remember pointing out to the students that there were texts in the library, as there were when I was an undergrad, that displayed the Latin on one side of the two page spread, and English on the other, and that they were free to use them as aids, but that I wanted their own translations. I also told them that we'd go over two or three versions of translations of pieces to compare and contrast how well the translators did in capturing the feel and mood of the piece.
