Movies

Went to see Spider-man on Friday and today. I finally gave in and signed up for Regal Unlimited, which the husband has had for a couple of years. It ends up paying for itself, given the number of movies we see most months, so there ya go. The first theater (Friday) has better seats, but is 30+ minutes away, versus the local one with normal seating, which is ~8 minutes away (or walking distance, if we're feeling it). Concessions at the first one were a disaster; there were no adults in charge of the teenagers working the counter, and they were a disorganized mess. In contrast, the second one was working better, as long as the manager didn't try to be "helpful" and direct people to the wrong place (which she did with a couple in front of us, whom we let back into line when it became clear the manager didn't know what she was doing). In both cases there were a couple rows and at least half a dozen seats between us and the next people.

Going to have to get on my dad's case about getting real hearing aids. He's lost 30% of his hearing, and from the descriptions from mom he's withdrawing somewhat, likely because of that. So gentle badgering it is. Yay getting older. And while I get that they're a pain in the ass, and expensive, so are glasses, and you wouldn't deny yourself the ability to see, would you? Ugh.

My dad was on a Navy ship in the late 1950s. A big gun was shot off and no one told them to put on their ear protection. As a result he lost a lot of of his hearing. As he got older it got worse. That last five or so years of his life he became extremely isolated. He got a text phone, but when the pandemic hit his vascular dementia sped up due to no social interaction, and he no longer felt comfortable using the phone. I was lucky that I was able to spend a lot of in-person time with him during those years, especially after the pandemic hit. But I saw what hearing loss did to him.

My friend's husband, who is 61, got hearing aids two years ago. That's pretty young, but he's doing the smart thing. Maybe your badgering shouldn't be too gentle.

Spiderman was good enough to see twice?

A dissertation on Spider-man!
