Morning Peeves

Ah, to be back at work again. Even if only for 2 days each week.

1. Metro was running late. Grrr.

2. I forgot my iPod speakers, so I'm having to use CDs again (*gasp* - the horror!). Thank heavens I left some in the office for just such an emergency.

3. Judge Mary Terrell, profiled as one of the "four worst judges in America" (see SmokefreeDC.org, quoting Reader's Digest, February 20, 2001), has ruled that the Smokefree DC ballot initiative is inappropriate for the ballot because it would appropriate funds. Even worse than that, she uses phrases like "especially unique" in the decision, which just irks the hell out of me (something is either unique or it's not - there are no gradations of unique, much like there are no gradations of being pregnant; either one is or one is not, period).

4. On the whole "sleep - good food - cardio - weights" continuum of good health, the "sleep" part has been sorely lacking this week. I need a nap. ;-p

Uniqueness

Unless one specifies the one exact 100%-specific type of uniqueness he is talking about, then there are gradations of uniqueness. The unique A+B+C+D+E may not be the only A+B+C or the only D+E.

For instance, you are not the only Moose in the world. You are not the only commissioner in the world. But perhaps you are the only Commissioner Moose in the world. That would be unique. But if there's also a Commissioner Moose in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, you are not the the unique Commissioner Moose in the world, but you could still be the unique Commissioner Moose in the US. Unique, but less unique.

it seems to me that she is just using semantics to her advantage, and she's really trying to say
I don't like this idea because of XY and Z, but i especially don't like it because of bla bla bla...
wrapped up in the creative use of the word unique.

Typically, if there's a period, you're not pregnant. Or some I'm told. My knowledge in this arena is purely theoretical. ;-)
