Phones

Am I the only one who's amused that cell phones were once HUGE, and then got tiny, and are now getting HUGE again (mainly due to the screens needed for extra features like the camera, web services, etc.)?

My new Motorola v220 (http://commerce.motorola.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prrfnbr=256550&prmenbr=126&phone_cgrfnbr=1&zipcode=) is still the smallest phone I've ever owned when folded up. Up until two weeks ago, I was still carrying around a Nokia brick (http://www.nokiausa.com/phones/3360)... but way, way, back when, it was the Motorola brick... the one with an LED display that caused an unfortunate bulge when you put it in the front pocket.

I've always preferred my first cell phone... it was the length and width of a handset but only 1/2 inch thick. It fit in the back pocket of my pants comfortably and it felt like a phone when I held it.

My new one (which I left at home today by the way) is thicker, shorter and just awkward. *whine*

They are spanning a whole range of sizes, from tiny to big.

We just released a phone in the shape of a tube of lipstick on steroids. It is voice activated and has no keypad and the screen is a mirror when off.

But did you field test that unit before they cancelled your participation in the program?

Did you see this story in the New York times?

A coworker got a cell phone with palm functions built in. It was huge. I'd rather have a seperate palm since the palm phone was large but the screen area still wasn't very big to write on.
