One change that has stuck with me since the retreat a month ago is that I no longer awaken to National Public Radio, or any other radio for that matter. My mornings have been decidedly quieter since I stopped, and I don't find myself missing it. Mornings feel more peaceful without the constant noise of the radio, less hurried, and easier to deal with, even when I've not gotten enough sleep, as was the case this week.
I've joked with a few people that it's because they got rid of Bob Edwards as the host of Morning Edition, but while that's a convenient excuse, it's not why I no longer listen. I just find myself valuing the silence over the news.
