Monday was most definitely a snow day, but you couldn't tell that from the flurry of work emails. As I said to one fellow lawyer, 'bored scientists gonna science'. 'Twas crazy busy on a day that people really should have been more chill, no pun intended.

Rest of the week has been okay so far. The husband dug out our driveway, much like the next several neighbors down to our left. Then we watched the HOA contract crew dig out the driveway to our right that hadn't been touched. Wish they'd make up their minds. First few years they dug out everything. Then suddenly they would only do the sidewalk and we were responsible for the 3 feet from door to sidewalk (which was still the case this year) as well as the driveways for those of us who don't have driveways on an alley (which is most of the townhomes). Cue the rolling of the eyes. But in any case it was all clean for our housecleaner to come over today, a couple days early because she has a doctor's appointment on her normal Friday.

Escaped the house to go get comics this afternoon, then hopped right back inside. We are braving pizza delivery this evening after being assured they were open and delivering. I tipped more than usual in recognition of the road conditions, which are okay, but not stellar.

For the good deed, that is. The young friend apparently had a cold at the end and the husband and I have it now. LOL I'm fighting it, he's got it full blown. I'd tease the friend about it, but he'd take it way too seriously and go into a spiral right now, so I'm just teasing the husband instead.

That said, I still got in a workout this morning. Trying a one-week program from my favorite mobility site. So far so good, though getting in the steps while teleworking is a challenge. Speaking of, scuttlebutt in the office is that rather than a couple months we're probably looking at 9-12 before we can move into the new building because of all the work that has to happen to get the IT systems up to snuff, including work outside the building to tear up the street and install better external wiring. So much for "move in ready" in the request for proposals. Not complaining, at all, just amazed at how messy this whole thing has been. All because a large agency head hated his building downtown, and his commute. Lawdy.

Settled in

Got the young friend settled into his new apartment this evening, post-work. He seems to be settling in okay, and he's doing better at reflecting on the relationship with his ex-fiance. Thank heavens. With the young friend out tonight I was able to set up my bike in the trainer downstairs again, giving me back that option for exercise in the morning. Yay.

Returned to more regular work today. My team used AI in one of the tools we have access to for the first time to summarize a document from another agency for our boss. Reviewed it closely to make sure it was actually accurate, and passed it along verbatim to our boss, with appropriate attribution and a lot of our own analysis as well. I'm still not sold on AI tools, but given that I'm at a science agency, and we're paying for this thing, I have to get used to it. I'm still cognizant of how much AI hallucinates, hence the careful vetting of the summary, and making sure she knew it was not our own work. I'm reminded of the phrase "change equals stress".

Slacking

I've been slacking off on my PT exercises for the repaired knee, with the (expected) result that it's been more sore lately. Splurged for a squat wedge, which is a lot easier to use for heel elevated squats. I can get a lot deeper into a squat than on flat feet, and that was one of the things they had me doing a lot when I was going to PT on the regular. Between that and the slack block my knee is feeling better.

Was back to work today, teleworking. Relatively quiet, so mostly cleaned out email and read a longish memo from justice that pertains to my small gubm'nt agency's work, though it was written for a different agency. We'll have to change some of our programs, and cancel some others, under this new guidance. But that's a problem for next week.

The husband and I are going to take some trips via airplane next year so I'm applying for TSA's PreCheck clearance. He's already got it, and I consider it worth the cash to not deal with as much security nonsense at the actual airport. Less valuable in the DC area where it's well known and so well subscribed, but for flying back I understand it cuts out a lot of hassle.

My coworkers seem to be settling back into the fully remote routine. I think it helps that it's so close to the year-end holidays, so much of the normal business of the agency is quieter than usual. Not to say that we're not working, but the normal urgency isn't quite as bad as the norm.

Comics, dinner, and a Target run. I was surprised at how quickly we were able to get out of Target. The husband's sister had ordered something for her husband that she had us pick up, and then we went ahead and got the candy for stockings while we were there. I also picked up a Roku stick for the monitor in my office, as I slowly turn my office into a pseudo-man-cave. Hoping that the better seating and some TV will be conducive to more knitting and cross stitching. In unrelated news I finally finished the first section of dark grey yarn for the latest scarf so now I have to refresh my memory of how to switch colors. I know it's not hard, I just haven't done it in a while. I did some knitting on it while we were in Ocean City, and managed to finish the section today while waiting to pick up the husband from the Metro.

Had grand plans to wrap the presents that have arrived, but alas, Amazon decided that 7-11am delivery of wrapping paper actually meant 7-11pm. No biggie, but I had to put some of the stuff I'd set up in the kitchen to wrap back in my office before the husband got home. I know it's rough work this time of year, and this wasn't pressing, so I'm not stressing over it.

I did go through his lego advent calendar and pull the bricks for the rest of the month so I could catalog which pieces were missing and order them. No clue when they'll arrive, but hopefully I got them all this time. Has still been a fun process, and I think he enjoys the ships that he has been able to build.

Work is ... weird? Like hey, it's the week before Xmas week, so it should be slowing down, and it sort of is, but the administration is still nuts and sticking to their crazy deadlines, so we still have odd one-off things to do. In the meantime, I have zero motivation for most of it between our ridiculous forced office move and (*waives hands wildly in the air*) all of the rest of it, but I plow through.

So tired

Was in my office building today for our holiday open house, and cleaning up the last of the stuff in my office before they kick us out. Was glad to see people, but I am looking forward to the several months of full time telework that we'll have while they fix up the new building. Here's hoping it's a disaster inside so it takes longer to arrange. In the meantime, I just want to sleep for more than 7 hours tonight.

The husband and I are taking off for Ocean City tomorrow for their winter Comic Con. It's a small affair, but it looks like it'll be fun. And this will be a nice respite before his sister and her husband and daughter come down the following weekend for Xmas week. I'm actually looking forward to seeing the niece since she was so chatty the last time we saw her in October (which is a pleasant change from her previous quiet self). I'm looking forward to seeing her parents, too, but the teenager promises to be more fun to watch and interact with this time around.

Actually went into the office for a few hours today, to pack things up because we're getting kicked out some time after the first of the year. We're moving not quite a mile down the road to a very dated building that another agency vacated a couple years ago. This is mostly because a cabinet secretary who lives in the suburb where my office is located doesn't want to commute downtown to his agency's long time (and admittedly quite decrepit) headquarters. As my small gubm'nt agency has no political leadership at the moment, there was no fighting this, so we're moving. Whee. I went in, packed those things I wanted to drag home with me, boxed the stuff that the agency movers can haul over, and tossed things that were no longer needed. Only other thing I ended up doing was certifying my time for payroll, because nothing was really pressing. As expected, the drive took half as long as usual because of the holiday, and the cart came in handy to get everything back to the car in one haul. Now I just have to figure out where to store and/or put the stuff I brought home.

The husband, in the meantime, was off work, and put up the Xmas trees. Poor guy is under the weather; we suspect food poisoning from something left out too long yesterday (that only he fixed and ate). Once I got home I helped unbox ornaments and stage them for him to hang. He crashed earlyish, after fretting over all the holiday lego sets that were sitting in bags on the kitchen island that needed to be sorted & repaired. I insisted he leave them for tomorrow, then waited a sufficient time before going in and fixing them all so he'll wake to that tomorrow.

I'm dragging today as well, from two days of not sleeping well. Yesterday was for love - I stayed up until midnight to make sure I could snag his Star Trek lego set online, which I did get after a few minutes wait. I dropped the directions and the legos for the miniature version when I got home from work, but he was so ill that the reaction was ... muted. Poor guy. He apologized all over, but he really is sick, so he gets a pass. We'll see how the advent calendar goes. Unfortunately the last of those bricks aren't arriving until the later end of next week, so he may have some half built sets until they do.

Half day working, with official admin time given since we don't have any political leadership at the small gubm'nt agency. Heh.

Comic run for the weekly haul. I was wearing a DC United (our local soccer team) hoodie, and got to tease some of the football people there about the newish (3 years) name of the DC football franchise (the Washington Commies, aka the Commanders). It was all in fun, but they really should have thought out how the name would be shortened. IHOP for lunch because it was there, we didn't have any strong feelings on food, and our favorite place next to the comics shop is closed for renovations or reimagining or something, though we did see folks hauling in a lot of food this afternoon, so maybe they rented it out for Thanksgiving? Who knows. I just hope when they reopen that they still have the husband's hotdog on the menu.

Did pop into the local Giant grocery store. While the lot was full, and there were definitely more people than usual, I parked almost exactly where I normally do, near the edge for a faster drive out, and once I got past the idiots who decided to just stop and stand in the entrance to the store while they hauled out and slowly read their shopping list, it went smoothly. For once they had enough checkers at the regular registers, which was a pleasant surprise. We were only picking up a few things because we're not doing a huge meal tomorrow. Lots of side dishes, and that's about it. I was once again grateful that I invested in my own shopping cart, a Clax collapsible cart, because checkout's a lot easier without bags, and when you know everything will fit. Plus it's hard to overshop when you're putting everything in the crate you're going to bring in from the car. And it's more maneuverable than most store carts.

Caught the first episode of the last season of Stranger Things with the husband this evening. Still enjoying the show, but worried the answer to shutting it all down will end up killing off another character. Fingers are crossed that I'm wrong, but it'll be months yet before we know.

Run down

Been feeling somewhat run down for about a week and a half, with an intermittent cough, and some light chest congestion. No fever, no discolored anything, but finally went to see the doctor this afternoon. The practice I go to is one I've been going to since 1998 or 1999, and seeing the same doctor, who's about ten years older than I am. He's been making moves to keep the practice going, but clearly looking toward retirement as well, and so is adding more doctors and nurse practitioners to the group (he's had other doctor partners over the years, but I think they've all retired at this point, so he needed more). Saw one of the new guys, welcomed him to the practice. Didn't find anything specific, because it's not really presenting as anything, so he gave me a script for an inhaler to calm my lungs down and told me to monitor for any discoloration or change in the no-fever situation. First time using an inhaler, which is an odd thing to get used to. Still glad to have gone in and had it checked.

Work is still playing catch up to get operations back and running. We've gotten partial back pay while the payroll processor figures out all of the missing deductions and what not. In theory we should get the rest this week, then I can figure out what goes where and try and clean things up, financially.
legalmoose: (Default)
The House managed (barely) to pass the Senate's continuing resolution, so my coworkers will all be back online tomorrow. The House majority is so thin they needed several minority votes to make it happen. What a mess.

Our human capital folks warned that while pay checks will be issued next week on the regular payday, they'll be a mess as the payroll provider tries to handle all of the calculations, deductions, taxes, etc. Whee.

I just hope they get it sorted before December.

Still on medical telework, so I will not be on the Metro with the rest of the Feds, trying to remember how to commute after 43 days off work.

The news last night/this morning is all about Congress finally seeming to take a step back from the brink and doing their jobs - talking to one another and coming up with deals that the two parties can agree on. If they're able to get all of that done this week I'll finally receive a pay check next week, for the first time since early October, when we got a partial check for the period through September 30th. We're normally paid on an every-two-weeks basis, so I've missed two full paychecks in addition to the partial one already, and that's beyond ridiculous at this point, especially as I continue to have to work, albeit intermittently.

I get that partisans are pissed that, as expected, the party causing the shutdown got little to nothing out of their efforts, but them's the breaks. Politics is not for the faint of heart, and 'you can't always get what you want', to quote the Rolling Stones.

In the meantime tomorrow is a Federal holiday, so I'm fully furloughed, which is a nice change (no checking work email). Probably doing some needed grocery shopping, and hunting some more esoteric ingredients for stuff I'd like to try. We have no firm Thanksgiving holiday plans, but the in-laws will be visiting for Xmas as usual, so this is a good time to try out & plan any new things. Especially if I'll be back to the office next week.

It's the day the house cleaner comes, so apparently the bug hit me and I decided to do a bunch of random little projects around the house. It's supposed to get below freezing here early next week for the first time this season, so I knew I needed to switch off the outside faucets, which also entailed (finally) cleaning the sliding glass doors on the back of the ground floor. They get splashed with dirt when it rains, so are perpetually slightly smudged towards the bottom. Cleaned those up, got the water shut off. Then I decided to straighten up a box of winter accessories we keep on the front hall table that had gotten clogged up with a mishmash of junk over several years (soooooo many useless early covid masks), mainly because I wanted to relocate some of the scarves I've knit lately down there. Found three gloves missing mates.

For some reason I decided to clean out the glove box in the car (it made sense at the time, I think). Discarded some extra materials from Mini, pared down to just the current insurance and registration info, found out the back seats supposedly can slide forward and backwards (we've only had the car since 2017, after all, and never needed that feature). Reorganized some big scented candles that were in multiple places in the garage and kitchen.

And then I was mentally done so I went out to lunch to get away from more straightening up. I think I blame work for cancelling my one meeting this morning, a thrice weekly check-in, which left me feeling antsy and in need of a project to put things back in order, since I can't control what those idiots in Congress do.

Slowing down in terms of work, speeding up in terms of other life things.

Work has been getting a tad slower. Most of the folks know what they should/shouldn't be doing at this point, so there's little need to consult the lawyers after you've been going at it for 35 days. We do get inquiries, but not as many. That may pick up as we start planning restart activities, for whenever Congress decides to do their damned jobs. There's rumors of movement, but nothing as yet. It's not like they can take the House's bill at this point, since that only takes us through the week before Thanksgiving, and no one wants to deal with this mess all over again in three weeks anyway.

In happier news, I finished the latest scarf tonight. No pictures yet, as it's still damp on a towel for blocking at the moment. Looking at the next things in the queue I may go nuts and cast on two projects - a chunky hat with an interesting bit of color work detail (in grey and dark blue), and this very 90s looking scarf that the husband asked me to make him when I was flipping through patterns (in the exact colors pictured, because my local yarn shop had that exact wool in stock). It apparently looks just like a sweater he had back in the 90s that he loved. The scarf will be a ton of mindless 2x2 ribbing, which makes it perfect for the few meetings I have, as well as new TV viewing, where the hat will need a bit more attention, so older movies I've seen will be the call there.

Caught up on comics last week, and again this afternoon. Not thrilled with the current book on my kindle, The Portable Door. Having just finished re-reading the Wheel of Time series, I'm finding the smart assedness of this one jarring. Not that I don't love a book with a smart assed voice, but it's not hitting for me right now.

Had what is likely my last physical therapy session for the knee today. I have a ton of notes I took on exercises, so I think I'm set. It's surprisingly not sore this evening, even after some shuttle runs and turning drills. I won't be running a race any time soon, but in theory I could start more walking with some running interspersed.
legalmoose: (Default)
Work is just intermittent enough to keep me from really getting into a comfortable 'not working' groove. That said, I did finally finish the dancing droplets scarf on the trip up to Boston, and started the little Pierre skinny scarf as well. I'm about 1/3 of the way through that one now, and I think I'll make some good progress on it tomorrow because my one morning check-in meeting was cancelled. It's an easy pattern, four different sections (garter ridges, seed stitch, twisted ribbing, and textured triangles) of twelve rows each. I do have to have the pattern print out in front of me to follow along, but it's easy beyond having to check where you are. I think the next one in the queue will be less needy in terms of reading the pattern, at least for most of it.

The visit to Boston and Salem was a lot of fun. We got to do more touristy stuff than we normally do when we go up to see family (though we did get to see my sister-in-law and her daughter). On a side note, high school seems to agree with the niece, as this was the chattiest we've ever seen her. Good deal. I overdid it walking; the knee was not happy with me, and I bowed out of some stuff a couple afternoons to rest it, but I think I've recovered sufficiently to start back on more activity now.

The husband managed to come down with a head cold the day after we got back, and I managed to avoid it until the following Sunday (this past Sunday). It's more annoying than debilitating, but seems to be on the mend now. Had some tests with my gastroenterologist this week based on an anomalous test result from back in August at my annual physical, but it all came back fine, thankfully. The six week wait from August was annoying, but the practice was hopping as all of these furloughed feds catch up on doctor visits.

Overall the furlough is just ... boring. Beyond the stress of the no-pay situation, the vast majority of us would simply like to be doing our jobs to serve the American public, so it's demoralizing when our leaders keep fucking around with political gamesmanship rather than doing their damned jobs.

Stepped up

The local DC area community, no stranger to government funding lapses, has done a good job in stepping up for furloughed Feds. One of my local yarn shops is running free classes to teach knitting and crochet, with donated supplies, other places are offering food or drink discounts, etc. So yesterday the husband and I took advantage of one of these and went out to an alpaca farm. They were shorter than I expected; I think I was thinking llamas, which are taller. Mostly well behaved - no spitting, though there were some disagreements over who got to come up and take the snacks we took out to them. 'Twas quite fun, and I'm glad we got to do it. Of course I bought some yarn, though I'm not quite sure what I'll turn it into yet (which is a violation of my recent 'no yarn buying unless you have a pattern picked out for it' anti-stash rule). All in all a nice way to spend a late Tuesday afternoon.

Cleaning up

Oct. 5th, 2025 12:21 pm

Finally tackled a long-desired task, cleaning out the pantry. Did toss a bunch of overly old things, though nothing from before our move in 2020 this time (we were so ready to get out of the old apartment that we just tossed it all in boxes and dragged it with us, regardless of age). And now we have a better mental map of what's there and what's gone, plus we can see everything again. Plus it motivated the husband to use up the bananas on the counter; he's making banana chocolate chip muffins as I type this. I know what breakfast is going to be the rest of this week.

Men's knitting group this afternoon. Definitely feeling the need for some social time with knitters today, with all the shutdown stuff leaving me bored out of my mind. The knitting store we're going to today has been offering free classes to furloughed feds, which is very generous of them. Not that this is the DC area's first shutdown rodeo, but this one feels very different from previous ones, and not just because I'm directly affected this time (in previous ones my agency had funds so I worked fairly normally).

Done with my Continuing Legal Education credits for the year, as of yesterday. There are more offerings, so I may go ahead and bank credit for next year since I'm not doing anything else. The Virginia bar makes you do twelve hours yearly, but allows you to roll up to a year's worth of credits from one to the next, so this would save me for next year.

New starts

Oct. 2nd, 2025 06:03 am
legalmoose: (Default)
October started with a lot of new things. New toothbrush (once a quarter I swap them out), new paper journal, and a government shutdown where my agency's salaries and expenses funding actually ran out so I'm dealing with furlough crap for the first time in my almost 27 years as a Fed. I myself am excepted from furlough in this one because I'm working the legal issues around the lack of cash, but in all the previous shutdowns my big gubm'nt agency had funding that carried forward into the new year, or had gotten its regular appropriation already, so we never closed. So the actual rhythm of this all is new, despite being the money lawyer and so very much in the middle of preparations for lapses for decades now.

Mostly it feels like I'm going to be bored. And then, once I finally settle on whatever distraction I want to indulge in (reading, knitting, video games, etc.) I feel like I'm going to be annoyed when the inevitable one-off legal question comes in. At least my agency is doing the smart thing and having those of us who are still working do so remotely; I understand some of the bigger agencies are still insisting that people come to the office to do their excepted work, in line with the overall return to office policy. That seems like a nightmare, and a recipe for even worse boredom, especially since you're not legally permitted to do your normal job duties, only those which fit the narrow legal exceptions to the lack of funding (imminent threats to life or property; constitutional functions; etc.).

I've never been able to read these things correctly, so I have no clue how long this one will last. As I like to explain it at work, if I could guess with any accuracy what Congress would do in a given situation I would be making a lot more money somewhere else. So we'll see. The husband and I discussed finances and I think we'll weather a protracted (month or so) shutdown with a little tightness but no missed bills. Heaven forfend it go longer than that. Though it would perhaps give me time to start and finish a knitted blanket (with already-purchased yarn) that I have in the queue.
legalmoose: (Default)
The annual DC tradition of trying to guess whether Congress will fund us before the fiscal year ends at the end of this month has begun. I get asked, because of what I do, but my go-to response is always, "If I could guess with any accuracy what Congress would do on any given day I would be making a lot more money in some other job."

Easing back into commuting to the office, though still mostly on medical remote work. I tell folks when they ask why I'm in that I'm practicing walking. Which has the virtue of being true. And it allows me to assess the stuff in my office for disposal and/or taking it home before we (eventually?) move office buildings.

The current scarf hit a snag, mostly because I bought a Switch 2 and have been playing on that instead of knitting. The pattern has been fine, the amount of attention has been finite. Speaking of, here's the niece's scarf (three links/pics). I'm very happy with how it turned out.

Bouncy

Today's PT was all about bouncing, hopping, breaking, etc. Those movements that are necessary if one is going to be out walking/running. So we're pretty much done with strength training now, and on to working my hip flexors and glutes in new and interesting ways. Progress!

Work had me read something to see if we should cancel it. I said it was borderline, but leaned to keeping, but management was spooked, so they were planning on canceling it. It was at that point that I repeated my work zen mantra to myself - "they pay me the same no matter what; they pay me the same no matter what." It's not as bad as paying me to make photo copies (which is a waste of salary at my level), but whatever, if that's what you need me to do, that's what I'll do. Ohm.
