Mini cookup

Made breakfast (egg bake) for the week. Prepped some chicken breasts for the freezer (pounded to an even depth, salted for a bit, then wiped down for freezing) because they had a good sale. Sautéed some squash for dinner & leftovers. Not bad. Also remembered that if one is getting tired of banana bread that topping it with vanilla ice cream is a good way to switch it up.

Men's knitting group was good. I'm at the point in this shawl where it took me almost two hours to do four rows. I don't even know how many stitches across it is, but I have another 50+ rows to go, adding 2-8 stitches per row. It's gonna be pretty, but man this is getting long.

Back to work after a week off. Hopefully my work laptop won't demand the damned bitlocker key again, which seems to be happening more often these days (it's happened now four times).

Free comics

Today was the annual "Free Comic Book Day" at local comic shops across the US. We popped in about an hour and a half after our local place opened to let the crazies clear out. Was busy, but not claustrophobically so. Then we popped next door for some groceries.

The husband had a friend over and they made a lemon pound cake, which we sent home with said friend. Smelled good, but as it was loaded with butter I forwent the experience. That's okay, he made banana bread yesterday, so I wasn't hurting for baked goods.

Slowly making my way back through the DLC for Horizon Forbidden West on the PS5. I had gotten up to the end, but never finished it, so I'm working through it now, including collecting some things I didn't bother with last time around. Is a fun game, and I do hope they make a third one.

Up Nawth

Good drive up, fairly uneventful, about 9 hours with lunch & pee breaks. Buying snacks ahead of time was definitely the right decision.

The immediate family is good. Wake is tomorrow evening, Mass is on Wednesday. Excellent dinner at a new-to-us Italian restaurant near the sister-in-law's house, that had gluten-free gnocchi. Very tasty.

The hotel is an absolute dive. An extended stay place where they acted insulted that we asked for another pillow. Definitely not staying here again.

The husband and I have to head to the Boston area next week for a family funeral. Which also, unfortunately, means some suit shopping tomorrow because I don't have one that fits at the moment. I am once again extremely grateful that the primary practice area for my small agency staffed up well before this administration and that none of them have left, so we have plenty of coverage while I'm out.

The cortisone seems to be more fully kicking in; walking is a bit more normal. But I still want them to go in and see what else can be done.

Easy dinner of eggs & rice tonight for me, mac & cheese for him. We watched The Gorge on AppleTV+, which started out really well, then quickly jumped the shark on the way over the putative gorge. We had fun complaining about how off the rails it went, so it wasn't a complete loss.

Undoing

Long day reviewing existing things at work so the new group to cancel them. Whee. Kept having to impress upon career people that this was a vibe check, that we're going to get sued, and so be it, we just needed to get through it and be done with it.

The husband continues to bake, this time a small olive oil cake. Very tasty.

Regular doc checkup tomorrow, and an appointment with the postal service to pay for and turn in my passport renewal. It's well over due, so I have to go in person, and this way they can do the photo, too. Getting the little card as well as the book, first as a just-in-case it's useful, and then as an added, more easily carried proof of citizenship. Because yes, I'm that paranoid.

Slept for shit last night, between eating too much Chinese food and the knee still setting down. So today was lots of video game grinding, then I watched a couple movies while finishing a dish cloth I was working on to try out some color work before I tackle a blanket in a similar pattern. But first I need to finish a shawl I've been working on.

Was sorely tempted to take advantage of Brooklyn Tweed's going out of the yarn business sale, but I don't need to spend the money right now, and I definitely don't need any more yarn guilt.

Stomach's calmer, so here's hoping sleep will be easier. The husband is out of town with his sister to commemorate their Mom's passing during the beginning of the COVID pandemic, which leaves me plenty of knitting time.

Shot up

Cortisone shot in the knee, which I babied the rest of the day (lots of video gaming, sprawled out on the couch). Back in four weeks to see how it's doing, and see if we need a referral to another physician in the practice to do a camera scope inside.

Ordered Chinese in, ate way too much for someone who's sedentary. Oh well.

A big policy document finally shook loose at work, so now we can turn to doing and back away from all the hand wringing. I am so, so very grateful that I recruited one capable, personable attorney from my old agency to work on my portfolio, and he in turn recruited another capable, personable attorney from our old agency for the same. Having backup that I enjoy talking to has been such a blessing, especially on days like today where I needed to be away and resting.

For two

The husband has been dealing with work stress and that has meant he's been baking. This past weekend was cupcakes, then a cake-for-two using the leftover frosting on Monday. Banana muffins on Tuesday. Today was peanut butter sandwich cookies. I am eternally grateful now that america's test kitchen put out their "baking for two" cookbook this year, as it gives him ways to indulge stress baking without making enough for a dozen people. Six cookies was just enough. The cake-for-two was still a lot, but better than having an entire cake sitting around. Best gift ever.

Off to the orthopedist tomorrow to see what sort of injection he has planned. I just want normal movement - having the knee lock up while trying to walk ain't fun.

As the small gubm'nt agency continues to try and thread the needle of courts versus policy direction, I keep hearing about things and being told that people at senior levels are either asking the agency head if they can read me into something, or they're telling other people to come ask me questions about some policy they're developing. In the first case the agency head keeps saying no, which I interpret as him trying to minimize the number of people working on things, but at a certain point it starts to feel personal. In the second case I have nothing to add because I haven't been read into the policy (see case the first), so I have no clue what they're doing. So when it all blows up, it's not my fault, because they won't let me do my job. Whatevs.

Tonight after work was another stop at the local market, this time for some more zucchini to sauté, and sweet potatoes to boil & mash, to go with the leftover meatloaf, which heated up nicely in the toaster oven.

I had a whopping one thing planned for today, to make breakfast ahead for this upcoming week. Got it done (a 'crustless quiche' - basically an egg bake with some veggies in it), and whipped out some meatloaf and mashed potatoes for dinner as well. Woo.

Was otherwise mostly a zombie today. I did also get a repeat done on a dishcloth I'm working on. It's in a two color honeycomb pattern, and I'm treating it as a preview of a honeycomb blanket I have queued up sometime soon (I bought a kit, so the yarn is here and ready). I get it now, and the dishcloth is actually easy enough to do on the Metro, so I might work on it during the morning commute. Or not. Who knows.

Knee is still unstable. *shrug* Which was a large part of sitting on my ass knitting or playing video games today.

Had some friends over for games and a trip to the local Olive Garden. These were city boys who don't get out to suburban restaurants, so it was a treat for them.

The new drug doesn't seem much different from the old NSAID? Other than the fact that it's a 3x a day pill versus 1x a day, which makes it easier to forget to take. Knee is still being obnoxious for walking, and this morning my skin was irritated from the firmer brace overnight.

My credit union sent me a "you haven't used your credit card with us enough, so we're going to close it if you don't use it before this summer" letter, so I ordered the husband a doo-dad for his stand mixer (a cover that fits over the big whisk, that you pull down when you're done to clean most of the stuff off of it; he'll love it). Hopefully that'll mollify them.

Moved up

Managed to move my next orthopedist appointment to next Friday versus a week from Monday, and they gave me a stronger NSAID to start tomorrow. Going back to a bigger brace is helping, too.

Missed lunch because of a last minute meeting, but managed to finish something that we needed to get done for the agency head, so yay? Also, no real news on the budget yet, though other agencies' plans have leaked to the press and they're pretty draconian. I would not be surprised if ours was half of our current level, which would be consistent with the public plans that the think tanks announced prior to the start of this administration.

Ordered in dinner as soon as we got home, watched some fun British TV, then read some.

Passed my 8k step goal today just from running around the office. Ended up staying later than I'd intended, but the husband and I still did comics and dinner out, albeit a late one. Almost forgot to grab my work shackle, er, iPhone, because it was sitting on the charger. Alas, I remembered it before I got out of the suite. I do appreciate being able to leave the computer at work now.

If I'm reading the budget resolution correctly (which is kind of a crap shoot, honestly) my agency might just be looking at a 4% reduction below the previous administration's planned budget for this year. It's hard to tell because those are written at a very high level (think "here's the total amount for all national defense spending, by year, for the next decade"; or here's the total amount for all energy spending, or all medical spending, etc. - no breakdown by agency). I'll try and quiz the budget office tomorrow to see what they've heard.

Went shopping for foodstuffs for the office, and I have to say that the canned soup selection at the local Wegman's was sorely lacking (I have a lunch crock pot I like to use in the office). Five gazillion types of wine, but a distinctly soviet feel to the tiny little soup section. I was hoping not to have to cart cans down from home. I'll try a couple and see if they're viable, but I may still need to haul the occasional can down as well.

Bummed

Feeling drained this evening, a combination of diet, knee, and work. On the diet front I'm trying some new enzymes that are supposed to help with digestion of FODMAPs, and so far it's early so it's a little hit and miss, but I'm giving it a try anyway. If it works long term that means more options for eating without digestive discomfort, but for now it's not quite there (so my gut is feeling off). On the knee front, just feeling annoyed at it in general.

On the work front, the latest exercise is a "find all the legal/regulatory requirements that directly tie to your job as an attorney for the agency" as we attempt to fend off cuts in the legal office (after at least two attorneys took the early out offer). The other two attorneys on my little mini-team are stressed as fuck right now, and that's bleeding over. I think we have ways to justify all of us, but in the meantime we're all a bit on edge, understandably.

Pre-snow

We're expecting another big (for DC) snow storm tomorrow through Thursday. Four to eight inches (10-20cm), which is a lot for here. Work laptop came home with me, and I will take advantage of any and all "unscheduled telework" days that pop across, like the "Early Departure ?" DC area Federal offices status message that's posted for tomorrow (the question mark, present in the original message, was my favorite part; like they weren't sure they completely meant it).

Commuted in, met the husband in metro on the way home. Ordered pizza for dinner and watched the last half of season one of Big Boys, a British show on Hulu that we're quite enjoying. Probably an early night tonight as Tuesdays are traditionally busy days for me as people manage to catch up on their weekend/Monday emails and start tossing bombs at the lawyers.

Giving in

Giving into the clothing store conspiracy, the husband and I went clothes shopping today, after overdue haircuts. Got some dress pants and a couple shirts for myself, so I'll have some fresh options as we careen toward full time in-the-office schedules. He's already mostly in the office full time (he works at a local university, in a student facing position, so he has to be there to deal with the kids), so it's business as usual for him.

Tried Raising Canes for the first time, at the husband's recommendation. Not bad, I'll go again. I appreciated that it was one of the simplest fast food menus in existence - how many chicken fingers did you want, and the sides depended on that number. Easy. Not a bad business model, either. I can see why they're so popular.

The drive up to Massachusetts wasn't bad. We made good time, and only really hit traffic when we got to the Boston I-95 beltway during rush hour, and even then the maps app had taken that into account with the timing. Checked in, all good. Got an upgrade to a "suite" because we walked into our first room and there were a handful of tools (think hammer, etc.) on the counter, so they switched us. Not bad.

Then dinner took as long as the drive up here did because we had The. World's. Slowest. Waitress. Seriously, she was just bad at her job. Good food, but overly warm in the place and slow service left me slightly cranky. Felt good to get outside into the cold.

All unpacked and ready for whatever we're up to tomorrow. I have a video call from 1-3 for the training class, and the husband is meeting one of his college friends while I do that, but otherwise we've no plans until Saturday.

Aftercare

I really should have done more aftercare after the walk yesterday, and before taking a rest day today. Quads (and maybe calves) were dragging the knee out of alignment and that was not fun. I beat both legs up with rollers and the Hypervolt this evening, so here's hoping that worked the stiffness out of them.

Commuting tomorrow to the office. One meeting scheduled to touch base on the work emergency from Friday because even more people are involved now. Whee! Also going to use the opportunity to try a breakfast sandwich at Dunks that is supposed to be more tummy friendly for me (their sourdough is supposedly real, made-with-an-actual-starter sourdough). This is important because we have to head up to the home of Dunks this weekend (aka Massachusetts) and it would be nice to have a friendlier option.

Late night

The husband was out late, and it's still gross outside from the snow, so I was up late last night to grab him from the Metro. But that's okay, because it meant I slept in this morning, so he had to walk himself to the Metro first thing to get to work. Karma.

Still walked on the treadmill, still made my morning meetings (that I'd forgotten until the work computer dinged at me), still got a lot of work done. Today was more of a 'leading people' day than substantive legal work, which is okay by me.

Then it was picking up the husband from the Metro, grabbing the weekly haul of comics, and enjoying pasta at the Italian place next door to the comic shop. I'll pay for the pasta tomorrow, but it was tasty. Apropos of that I ordered a new enzyme supplement that's supposed to help with digesting FODMAPs, and is aimed squarely at the ones that I react to, so here's hoping that's useful once it arrives.

Had another couple we're friends with over this evening, and made some new dishes (a maple glazed pork loin with Swiss chard & carrots; roasted broccoli; and lemon & parsley quinoa). They turned out well, for the most part, and were well received. The broccoli was a trifle overdone in spots (overly hot burner while pan roasting), but still tasted good. Then we played a couple riffs on queer versions of apples-to-apples that we picked up at the end of the year. Fun time.

Last day of work for the week was good. Nice chat with a new coworker, talked over some stuff that's going on with transition, and made plans to address at least one of them with a couple quick meetings next week (because, putting on my former information lawyer hat, one should never create more written records when a conversation is better suited to the topic). Also talked about how I'm not completely clear on what my role is going to be going forward as a big part of my portfolio is moving over to another attorney who just started. I'm okay with the hire, just in a bit of limbo over the scope of my duties at the moment.
