Ran twice now since the fall last Friday. Both were fine, this morning's was actually quite nice. I did go to urgent care on Wednesday to get my right hand x-rayed to ensure I hadn't gotten a chip fracture or other break because it was still feeling sore. No bones broken or fractured, just soft tissue soreness, probably because that's my dominant hand and I should've rested it more. It's much better now.

Also, tell me you live inside the DC beltway without telling me you live inside the beltway: while out running this morning two different people (a cyclist and a runner) separately were broadcasting the local NPR station on speakers while they exercised. ;)

The husband and I were out running some errands when my phone started lighting up with texts from friends about the news at the Capitol (and making sure we were okay). Another time I am so, so grateful we moved outside the city. As much as I love DC, and loved the location of the old apartment for many things, the worry it brought at times was not fun. Mind you, while it's 13 or so blocks from the Capitol as the crow flies, you have to cross a highway to get between the two, so it's not like the rioters would've been at our (old) gates. Possible, but highly improbable.

It was hard not to get choked up as I checked on other friends to make sure they were okay. It felt almost like 9/11, though back then you couldn't get through the (very early) cell networks to get any news or get through to friends, in that the news in DC was horrible, scary, and way too close to home.

Did a swing by the old apartment this afternoon to check the mail, and replace a couple batteries in some of the window shades. Turned out the 28 pack of batteries was not enough, because four of the five shades needed batteries (as opposed to the two that needed them a couple weeks ago), at 8 batteries per shade. So the bedroom is set, but the second shade in the living room will need a trip back there later. Maybe next weekend when I go check the mail again.

Checked all the lights and faucets, everything was working and no air puffs from the water system, which sometimes happens after maintenance. Speaking of maintenance, they did some in the apartment in the last couple weeks and apparently knocked one of the kitchen cabinet shelves off, so I took pictures and reported that to the building for them to fix. Found that they'd fixed the porch light, so it's now turning on instantly (it had been taking a couple hours to warm up previous to our move out). Also, turned in the 'new' parking space sticker, post parking lot repaving and repainting, so that's one less expense.

Now we just need some nice person to come buy the damned thing and get it out of my life.

Spotted on this morning's 2 mile run: two city tow trucks, and a couple DC United players arriving at the stadium. The run itself went well. Since I'm (once again) recovering from an injury and building back up, I've been playing with breathing almost exclusively through my nose, which I find helps me keep from speeding up too much and overdoing it.

It promises to be another long night here in DC. We're not near enough to downtown or the WH to be really impacted by the demonstrations, but I can hear the helicopters flying overhead pretty well, and occasionally police sirens will sound in the distance. We have the windows open tonight because some planned electrical work by the local utility tomorrow caused the building to have to turn off the AC this afternoon and all day tomorrow. So it'll be loud, and a tad too warm while trying to fall asleep, and then too cold in the morning. Minor inconveniences, I know.

The overwhelming emotion I feel most from all of this is sadness (and more than a dash of anger). I worry about the rest of this year and how the US will muddle through, despite the idiot in the white house.

Aside from work today, I did get out of the house and to the grocery store. Well, tried to go to one, and the main entrance to their garage was closed with a "use the 9th street entrance", but no other signage, so I decided if they didn't want to tell me how to get there I didn't need to go there, and drove to another store. Which was actually better stocked on many staples than the other one has been of late (I go there because it carries the brand of deli sliced cheese that the husband insists on, but which I thankfully did not need today). Made him instant pot mac & cheese, which he says is really good, and very rich. Being a lactard (and now one who has to avoid wheat) I don't partake. Was going to make something new for myself as well, but had leftover meatloaf & veggies instead. It worked.

Oh, forgot, the husband's place of employment, the school he works for, is about 2-3 blocks from the WH, but was mercifully untouched. They tagged the windows of the big consulting office next door, but didn't break any of the glass (though several business in the surrounding blocks were smashed in). He walked by this morning and checked on it, both for the exercise and to see the results from the past two nights in person, and was relieved to see the glass storefront untouched, while confirming with the building management that they were going to cover it with plywood today. I suppose he'll check on that in the morning. And at some point tomorrow we have to go vote in our local primary. Lines are almost never anything at our polling station, which is across the street, so I didn't bother with an absentee ballot.

Did about 20 minutes in the pool this morning, felt good. We'll see how (if?) sore I'll be later today, but I purposefully took it pretty easy to ease back into it. It had been long enough since I'd been that I'd forgotten the front desk person's name (Lisa), and they now have you register for an account online (last time I went you signed in on paper).

I remembered all of my gear (ear plugs!), and I hunted down my locker combo (and put it in my password reminder file), so everything was set that way. And it felt great to be in the water and exercising and NOT having my feet hurt from the damned plantar fasciitis I'm fighting with at the moment.

They'll be closed Friday next week, but otherwise the usual MWF schedule is good.

Gorgeous morning for a run here - low to mid 60s, moderate humidity. Just beautiful. Did a little over four miles. Wildlife spotted was a family of deer, two does and a six point buck. Was fun pointing them out to other people on a trail, including a dad with a kid in a running stroller, who seemed to have a lot of fun pointing the deer out to the kid.

I need to find a new running icon - I think that one is from the first practice triathlon I did in 2005. At this point the very dark hair on the chin in the photo is now very silver. ;)

Monday, got yelled at by someone while out running. He was in the car lanes on the bridge, I was on the (thankfully separated by a large barrier) walking path on the side. He yelled something out the passenger side window, and followed it with a middle finger. I suspect it was about the "LGBT Athlete" on the back of that particular running shirt, as I hadn't flipped off or yelled at any drivers that morning. Then a cyclist misread my "I'm heading to the right at this switchback at the bottom of the bridge" right pointing hand as "pass me on the right", and almost ran into me. Mind you, no signal, no bell, no calling out that he was behind me. I refrained from cursing (while in his earshot), but did yell back "always, always, always pass on the left" to his "I thought you were telling me to pass you on the right" BS. And this was all in the first mile. Needless to say, it was not the stress reducer that running usually is for me.

Wednesday, same shirt on (laundry was Monday night), and one of my tri club buddies whom I haven't seen in forever recognized me while coming up behind me on his bike and said hello to me by name as he passed. I, thankfully, remembered his name as well, so was able to say hello back. A much nicer run overall.

Today I did four miles for the first time since Denver. There were some walk breaks to bring my heart rate back down, and it was definitely harder than Denver was. I didn't seem to really get hit by the altitude in the week I was up there, but let me just say that regardless there's a world of difference between 59 degrees with 20% humidity and 79 degrees with 70+% humidity.

No wildlife spotted on this morning's run, but lots of construction activity on the new Douglas bridge.

Been mostly following my training plan for the marathon this fall, but I suspect I’m going to need to change some of the weekday workouts. I’m supposed to be doing around 8 miles on Wednesdays and Fridays, and I think it’s just a touch too much most weekday mornings. So I think I’m going to pop them down to 6 miles, with an option to do more if I feel I have the time for it.

One of the things I enjoy about the plan is that it mixes in cycling two days a week, and occasionally substitutes a long bike ride for a long run. Today was the first of those. Most of my bike riding during the week has been at Hains Point these past couple months (i.e., flat, flat, flat), but this morning’s plan called for 50 miles, and Hains Point, while nice, is not where you want to go 50 miles (picture endless loops of either 3.2 miles with less traffic, or 5.5ish but with a lot of traffic as the day gets later). So I headed out on the Custis trail to the Washington & Old Dominion trail, which is pretty much the complete opposite of flat. I think my quads and glutes are going to be paying for that choice tomorrow. On the upside, it was a lovely day, and a nice ride to Herndon and back.

I wish my long runs had been going as well, though. I seem to have a 10 mile problem – up to 10 miles are fine, but over that has had a block of some sort. I can’t figure out if it’s nutrition, heat acclimation, hydration, or what. It’s not been helped by my new acid reflux, which doesn’t seem to like bubbles (which are found in my favorite non-caloried sports drink tabs) or too much in the way of sweet calories (found in pretty much every other portable nutrition product). Trying to dial in the balance has been a chore. I’ll get there (I’d better!), but it’s a tad obnoxious.

We were in the low 50s two days ago, had 70 today, and will be in the mid-80s by Tuesday. I forget where the comic was that showed DC weather being winter-winter-winter then 12-hours-of-spring then blazing-summer-heat, but it’s definitely the case this year. Not that I’m complaining about warmer weather, but it’s so typical that we don’t get a spring before we go to summer. Love it.

Hauling a six year old around one of the most popular-with-kids museums in the Smithsonian system is tiring, to say the least. No sense of personal space, popping around wherever they can. The most amusing part was that she was rushing us through so she could get to what she truly wanted to do – go to the gift shop! She made out okay there, picking up a cherry blossom festival branded panda and some candy to take back to her sister.

It’s been a fun visit, though. Played some on the Wii with her, chatted with my brother, played tourist. Fun stuff. And after we put them on the train tomorrow, the boy has the rest of the afternoon off with me. Not a bad way to spend most of a week.

Definitely feeling much better today. Mood improved, a tad more energy, though still not up for real exercise yet (and I feel like an absolute slug from the lack of exercise. Ugh). But it’s getting there, which is the important part.

Got kicked out of work even before the early dismissal time we got because of the storm here in DC. About half an hour before my 2 hour point da boss called and told us to get the heck outta dodge because the snow was worsening and traffic was starting to turn into a real clusterfuck. I managed to catch a bus, so rode home rather than walking (I was prepared to walk – duck boots and all – but glad for the ride). Traffic was definitely horked, but our driver was pushy and got us through without too much delay. Seeing the news reports from lots of friends without power tonight I am very, very glad I bought close to downtown where the power lines are all buried. And if I do ever buy in an area where the lines aren’t buried, the place had better have a working fireplace and room to stack some wood.

Our newbie program is coming together now, and I think it’s going to be a good one this year, certainly better than last year’s (which I think we let slip some, to be honest). Now that I’ve finally gotten more brain power back I’m putting together some of the training materials to supplement our plan, and liking how it’s coming together. Oh, and I got registered for the USAT coaching class in April, so I’ll be going out for coaching certification then. Not sure how long it’ll take once I take the course and turn in my test to get the results back, but I’m hopeful I’ll get certified and then we’ll have a coach for the newbies finally, like we’ve been adding coaches for the more “advanced” programs we’ve started.

Biked up for errands this morning (dentist, picking up glasses, etc.), and there was a serious amount of stupid on the trail in Rock Creek. No helmet, helmet on but unbuckled (doesn’t do much good if it flies off your head when you fly off the bike…), people running on the left side of the trail, etc. Most annoying. Kinda makes you want to get “Trail Rules” signs like they have on other trails in the area.

Why is it that you say “I’m a triathlete” and suddenly you become all intimidating to some people?

I really, really wanted aero bars on my single speed bike this morning while down around East Potomac Park. File under “you know you’re a triathlete if…” you want aero bars on all your bikes. The instinct to get down on the bars while on a straight, flat stretch was pretty strong. Good sign that training on the tri bike is going well. Or at least has become second nature.

No A/C yet in the building, so while I wait for the cable guy to come by and slap a cablecard into the new TiVo it’s kinda warm. We’ll have it in two weeks once they transition the system over from heat, and I’m semi-okay with this because the new general manager here at the cult co-op is having his guys come by and do a comprehensive sweep and check of all the convectors in each individual unit to ensure they’re working, clean, lubed, etc. First time it’s been described that way (past just the usual “we’re changing the filters”), so I’m okay with delaying to ensure all the equipment is working at peak efficiency, or at least at a better clip than the norm. Having vacuumed off my own units, I have seen how nasty they can get, so I can only imagine what some of them look like. It’s nice to have a proactive manager for once; he’s been big on getting in to do preventative maintenance, which is much appreciated here.

Had plans with a friend to do some gaming, but he got called in to do more on a research project he’s leading at school, so no go there. A nap sounds like a good alternative. With the lack of A/C and temps in the 90s the past few days sleep has been elusive. Lots of tossing and turning and odd dreams, including some disturbingly vivid erotic ones. Waking up at 2 am with an almost painfully raging hard-on from one of those is not conducive to a lot of rest.

I’ve been indulging a crush, which has been fun. I feel like I can begin dating again, that I’m ready for that, with the result that I’ve been keeping my eyes open and my flirt meter at “medium high”. But I also feel like I’m looking more with an eye to finding something more than just casual. As always, nothing is set in stone, but we’ll see where the path leads.

The first weekend of spring was absolutely glorious here in DC. Despite my normal thing that Sundays are supposed to be my one, true “rest” day from exercise during the week I managed to bike across town and back twice, and over to the Hill once. Grabbed brunch with friends this morning up in Dupont, stretched it to an almost two hour affair, until the sun came round the building and started to hit us. The Hill trip was to pick up new tires for the tri bike, which is off the trainer, hopefully for the season, and needed new ones to make up for the wear from using the trainer all winter. I’ll keep the old tires for next winter.

Five gazillion people were on and around the Mall both trips up to Dupont, and in the afternoon coming back from brunch. “When marches/causes collide” could have been the caption. One of the many reasons I love living here, you never know what stuff folks are going to be in town protesting or praising.

Biked back up to Dupont for a last minute dinner/drinks (club soda for moi) thing with my friend M who is vaguely trying to hook me up with another cute friend of his, P. This was the second time we’d met, and P seems a little bit shy, but was generous with a hug both when I got there and when he left, so we’ll see.

In between bike trips I managed to take care of bills, update the financial software, sort mail, and vacuum, but not a lot else. Gotta say, I’m quite happy I picked up a little Dyson 24 from Woot last month, it’s been a peach, and has cleaned a hell of a lot better than my old vacuum did. I’m trying to keep the dust population down this year, hoping that will help with ye olde allergies, and this sucker has been very good for that. The sole complaints I had with it are that there’s no place on the unit to store the extra little non-carpeted-floor attachment that came with it (no biggie, I just toss it in a bucket I keep in the same hall closet), and that the cord is too short to get the entire apartment from one plug (it’s a small apartment), which has been remedied by use of an extension cord I had lying around. It gets under the bed easily with the little floor attachment, and it’s small enough to carry around when I’m using said attachment around the hardwood floors. Definitely a good purchase.

Goal for the week is to complete recovery from the race and prep the schedule for the next two to three races. Really happy with how the season has started, and hope it continues in the same vein.

It’s dark at 4 am when you get up for a race. I had to wear my glasses to bike over to the race this morning, since it started at 7, which was about 15 minutes before the sun came up. Switched to the sunglasses even in the dark because I knew I’d want them on the course, but not for biking over.

Nice, cool morning. Bike ride over was easy, though it took me a bit to find bike parking. I was the only one on the actual rack near the finish line – most people just locked up to street signs. Changed into running stuff, ran into club folks who were volunteering, club folks who were running, and other friends and coworkers who were running as well while we waited inside. Seeded myself back according to the time I thought I’d do. Interestingly, they assigned us to “corrals” according to our speed, but then didn’t put numbers out for the corrals, just the expected times. Ooookay.

They threw the professionals out on the course and then began the slow crawl toward the starting line. Once we got going I did pretty well pacing myself at just under 10 minute miles (and the results show my 10k split was at an average page of 9:55 min miles). The last half was a bit slower as we hit hills and I tired out some, but the 2:15:03 finish time was perfectly fine by me. As the first race of the season I wasn’t looking to break any personal records, just to get out and do the distance before the tri season got started. The course itself was good, the right level of challenge for an early race, though it was a tad quiet since a good chunk went through downtown’s business district and some sleepy neighborhoods. Adams Morgan was nice and cheery, with a good crowd, and there were good pockets of cheering here and there as well through North Cap and the Hill. I had fun giving high fives to a bunch of little kids along the race course where I spotted them in time. In any case the kids cheering always brought on a good smile.

Mile 11 seemed to be the missing mile for a lot of people, as in we hit 11 and then the next thing you knew, you were hitting the marker for 12 and thinking, “where did that last mile go?” At least 2-3 other people I talked to had the same experience. The last couple miles were challenging, and I was thanking my lucky stars I was just doing the half as it was starting to warm up as we came into the finish chute. I’m nicely sore this afternoon after a short nap and some goofing off on the PS3, post-race, but not injured and feeling pretty good. A good way to start the season, and I look forward to the rest of it.

So far so good on the new year. Did manage to get up too late to bike (on the trainer) this morning, but managed it this evening. Stopped by the gym on the way home and, once again, the manager wasn't in so they couldn't take updated credit card info, but I left a note to have him call me. I think the first time I'll get in to actually swim will be next week, but I'd like there to be no hang ups with getting into the pool. Not that I'm dying to get into the pool, but since it's a third of the triathlon, and my weakest leg, it's kinda necessary.

Got to ring in the new year itself with Mike and some friends of mine here in DC. Was a pleasant time together, with fun friends, good drinks, and board games.

I'm taking a sort of perverse amusement from the fact that it's below 50 degrees down in Tampa where my snow bird parental units are. The bone-chilling cold we've had here in the DC area for the past several days hasn't been fun, but it's not like it doesn't get down here on occasion in the winter, so we can prep for it. Tampa? Not so much, at least not as cold as it's been getting. Crazy stuff. And partially why I'm trying to clear the gym up - I can use their treadmills to run inside so I'm not out in 20-some degree weather freezing my toes off.

And of course I already want to change some items on my Uberlist, but I'll stick with what's written for now. Doesn't mean plans don't change, even this quickly, but that's the fun of a big doc like that. I'm thinking something more private and flexible might not be a bad idea, though, so help set out priorities and make some longer term plans for handling stuff.

No pictures yet, but I finished sock #1 of the set I'm doing from the Braun's Woods colorway. Fairly pleased with how it came out - the fit is really good. The way the colorway came out was a bit odd - I get a nice spiral up the leg, but the foot alternates between some light striping and two big chunks of pooled colors. Hmmm. I expect the 2nd sock (which has been cast on) will come out about the same.

Dug through stash to see what I might have for some quick hats for the two younger nieces for giftmas. Given my brother's job situation they'll get a check from me as the main gift, but something tangible for the little ones is good to do, too. Hopefully the bits of stash I've identified will be enough for two hats for them. Oh, and may I say that I am very, very glad I got a ball winder, as that's making re-packaging yarn to carry with me much, much easier.

Nice weekend here. One of my body electric brothers was in town and crashed here, so got in lots of walking around, playing tourist. I need to go ahead and join the Smithsonian as a supporter of the American Art Museum - I always end up taking people up there rather than the Mall! I especially love some of the crazy folk art stuff on the first floor; we 'Mericans have managed to come up with some batshitcrazy stuff (as well as some seriously good art, but the batshitcrazy tends to catch the eye). 'Twas good to catch up with him and reconnect, and I always enjoy playing tour guide in my little city.

Up a bit too late to run this morning, so will do so this evening instead. Will have the advantage of being warmer then, too. Made plans with Mike to head up there the first weekend of December. He'll be down the weekend after next, so I'll get to see him soon! There's a game day that weekend, too, so I get to show him off as well. The holidays will be a little bit crazy, and we briefly toyed with the idea of a visit "home" to his parentals, but it's a bit soon for that yet. We talk a lot, more than I normally ever like to talk on the phone (friends will confirm I'm more of a texter than a talker), but it's not felt forced or anything. Still smitten, obviously.

It's about time for me to go through the Uberlist for this year, catalog what's been done, what's yet to be done and is still doable, and what's completely out. Not quite sure how I've done - I haven't kept up with the list that well this year (in terms of looking it over), but I suspect I've done a bit more than I thought I might, realistically. But that's another post.

Starting to get back into a routine now after a couple of weeks of head cold, travel, complete abandonment of exercise, etc. Ran Monday and this morning (much to the chagrin of my legs), went to the men's knitting group tonight and got another inch or so done on the leg of the latest sock, cooked a good meal last night, getting into the groove of the new fiscal year at work, etc. A return to semi-normalcy, which is very welcome.

Part of cooking last night was using my microwave convection oven for the first time as an oven and not just a microwave. I knew they didn't take as long to cook, but didn't expect quite how much faster it would be. The little 3 lb turkey breast that the label said should take 2.5-3 hours in the oven took 45-60 minutes in the microwave convection oven, and came out quite nicely. Color me impressed. Add to that the butternut squash, roasted in the normal oven, and some asparagus to go with and it was a nice little meal, with some good leftovers. I need to cook more, and this was partly an experiment to see how easily I could cook up something like the turkey breast for taking into work instead of buying the deli meat sandwiches and all the filler they have in them.

Before heading out to the knitting group I raided my stash and managed to find the yarn I was going to make into a scarf last spring (improvised design, didn't work). I have found a better pattern which is almost exactly what I was envisioning for myself, so was good to find existing stash for it. I should catalog the stash again, and add in all the new sock yarn from the summer, but meh. Also managed to find some stash for a couple of other gift projects. Score.

Spending time with Mike this past weekend was wonderful. Still very much smitten there, and looking forward to seeing how it grows. We just fit together well, and he makes me want to be better.

Running's getting going again because I have a race in two months, and I will be prepared for this thing and its hills, come hell or high water. Fridays are going to start being hill workout days - heading up toward the Mall via L'Enfant Promenade (that dreadful monstrosity of I.M. Pei's), and if I can get far enough, up around the 'hill' around the Washington Monument. This is the problem with having moved down to the river - it's relatively flat here, and thus harder to train on hills without traveling. We'll see how this Friday goes.

Friends visiting over the next three weekends, including Mike in early November. Busy times, and good stuff to do - will help get me out of the apartment, and back into a social groove. While I am doing the IM in August, I need to better balance a social life of sorts, no matter how limited, and settle back into a better pattern of living.

I'm glad I attended the National Equality March (NEM). It's hard to come up with excuses not to go to an event held in your back yard, though heaven knows I've begged out of other things. The last "march" in DC for GLBT rights was the Millennium March (MM), and that one felt more like an extended version of DC pride than an actual "march" (in contrast, the MM had a vendor area much like DC's pride festival, down to the location). This one, at least for the march itself and the rally afterward at the Capitol, felt more purposeful than the generic feel-good atmosphere of the MM. Perhaps because this one was actually called for something, and didn't feel like a corporate-abused bit of PR for HRC.

And yes, in case you couldn't tell, I have an exceedingly low opinion of HRC. They got a lovely new building from all their fundraising, and the rest of us got saddled with DADT and DOMA. Not exactly a wonderful trade-off for paying for all their supposed "expertise" on lobbying.

Got down to the Capitol grounds as the Gay Men's Chorus of Washington was in the middle of their performance. I definitely could have done without the religious BS right after the Chorus sang, but I understand that it's a necessary evil in our society. Popped out after a bit of the rally to go grab food, a very late lunch, but wandered back afterward to meet a Twitter buddy who'd come down from Pittsburgh, and managed to catch Kate Clinton, Urvashi Vaid, Cleve Jones and the cast of Hair (I left again as Lance Black was talking). Kate was funny, Urvashi was strident and allowed to go on for too long. Cleve was good, and the cast of Hair was amazing (Lance was good as well, but I wanted to get home before it got dark).

Hopefully some progress will come out of this, legislatively, and hopefully Cleve will get his (unspoken) wish - a better organized actually grassroots organization to counter HRC and company's ineffective money pit, and actually get some work done. Were it not for the specter of how much worse a majority Republican Congress would be now (in the modern, nutso-driven version of that party), I'd like to believe we could do something like withhold donations until we got some progress on our issues, but I suspect that's not practical. Not that I personally give to anyone other than my local politicos anyway, since I have no vote for Congressional representation as a citizen of the District of Columbia, but that's a rant for another day. In any case, it would be nice to think that at least some of the folks here will go back and start talking to their representatives, Federal, State and local, and put more pressure on those same representatives to protect all of us.
