Slacking

I've been slacking off on my PT exercises for the repaired knee, with the (expected) result that it's been more sore lately. Splurged for a squat wedge, which is a lot easier to use for heel elevated squats. I can get a lot deeper into a squat than on flat feet, and that was one of the things they had me doing a lot when I was going to PT on the regular. Between that and the slack block my knee is feeling better.

Was back to work today, teleworking. Relatively quiet, so mostly cleaned out email and read a longish memo from justice that pertains to my small gubm'nt agency's work, though it was written for a different agency. We'll have to change some of our programs, and cancel some others, under this new guidance. But that's a problem for next week.

The husband and I are going to take some trips via airplane next year so I'm applying for TSA's PreCheck clearance. He's already got it, and I consider it worth the cash to not deal with as much security nonsense at the actual airport. Less valuable in the DC area where it's well known and so well subscribed, but for flying back I understand it cuts out a lot of hassle.

Slowing down in terms of work, speeding up in terms of other life things.

Work has been getting a tad slower. Most of the folks know what they should/shouldn't be doing at this point, so there's little need to consult the lawyers after you've been going at it for 35 days. We do get inquiries, but not as many. That may pick up as we start planning restart activities, for whenever Congress decides to do their damned jobs. There's rumors of movement, but nothing as yet. It's not like they can take the House's bill at this point, since that only takes us through the week before Thanksgiving, and no one wants to deal with this mess all over again in three weeks anyway.

In happier news, I finished the latest scarf tonight. No pictures yet, as it's still damp on a towel for blocking at the moment. Looking at the next things in the queue I may go nuts and cast on two projects - a chunky hat with an interesting bit of color work detail (in grey and dark blue), and this very 90s looking scarf that the husband asked me to make him when I was flipping through patterns (in the exact colors pictured, because my local yarn shop had that exact wool in stock). It apparently looks just like a sweater he had back in the 90s that he loved. The scarf will be a ton of mindless 2x2 ribbing, which makes it perfect for the few meetings I have, as well as new TV viewing, where the hat will need a bit more attention, so older movies I've seen will be the call there.

Caught up on comics last week, and again this afternoon. Not thrilled with the current book on my kindle, The Portable Door. Having just finished re-reading the Wheel of Time series, I'm finding the smart assedness of this one jarring. Not that I don't love a book with a smart assed voice, but it's not hitting for me right now.

Had what is likely my last physical therapy session for the knee today. I have a ton of notes I took on exercises, so I think I'm set. It's surprisingly not sore this evening, even after some shuttle runs and turning drills. I won't be running a race any time soon, but in theory I could start more walking with some running interspersed.

Both in terms of PT and the knitting.

At PT they're upping the weights in hand, and changing up the exercises, as they should be doing. I'm mostly fine on steps now, still some numbness when I kneel on the knee, and I can walk and bike pretty much normally. Zero cardio capacity at the moment, though, so I need to get on the bike more to help build that back.

Four more rows on the shawl. I'm 70% there, but with a lot more to go. I'm determined to get through this, though I may break and do a dishcloth or two when I need a small piece.

My nieces are all crocheting these days, and it's fun to watch them finish things.

This morning was the latest check-in with the orthopedist. He's quite pleased with the progress. The numbness I still have around the bottom of the kneecap, though it's been receding, is normal. Twelve weeks is this guy's mantra for recovery, so we power on through PT. Physical therapy is more like a workout now than earlier on, progressively heavier weights as we strengthen the quads. Whee!

But it's nice to have some external validation that the recovery work is humming right along on schedule.

Past that I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that my small gubm'nt agency keeps humming along. The latest draft budget out of the House wasn't nearly as much of a cut as 47 proposed, just $2B less than the current budget, as opposed to $5.1B less. We expect the Senate to be even less enthused with his request, but none of this is final until it's final, so I'm just keeping going as long as they'll let me.

We did some random out of the house shopping this past weekend. Tried a new (to us) used bookstore, where I found some fun stuff. Tried to go to a thrift store, but the parking lot was full, with more cars in the aisle. Luckily we were able to turn around and get out without getting trapped. Ikea for some shelves for Legos, lunch at some point in there, and home to nap. Did walk a bit too much without the one crutch that I'm using out of the house, but that's another thing I'm trying to stretch.

Early, but

Did get to bed early last night, and up early this morning. Biked, even (in the trainer). Knee is tolerating both. However, I had dinner with a former coworker to catch up in person, and didn't get home until 9ish, so I'll not be in bed early (for me). 'Twas worth the delay this evening, but I think I'll be dragging more tomorrow.

The five bullet nonsense is back, and is now weekly, because my agency is wussing out and not telling us not to respond. I'm getting my eye exercises in just thinking about them. You know, because I keep rolling them so much.

And this is the last month in our performance review year (april to march). I did pick up a little book about giving feedback that was recommended at the first half of training, which arrived today. Hoping that helps with writing up my own stuff, and giving management some assistance with the folks I'm unofficially helping with.

I'm on my feet a lot more now that everyone is back in the office full time. I'm doing some very informal coordinating of some of our joint work, so I'm up and about a lot. I took the standing desk down once for a meeting that ended up over in a conference room instead of my office; otherwise it stayed up all day because I was bouncing in and out of the office all day.

For all that I am an attorney, I don't have a lot to do with actual court cases. My role is typically to advise and let the program people run and do what they're going to do (or help clean up after the fact). So having to even tangentially keep track of all of the cases in various courts and all of the sundry temporary restraining orders has been a hoot.

After this week I'm going to need to adjust my sleep & waking schedules to adjust to this new work schedule. I'm making it in, but without any time to exercise. And I know myself well enough to know that if I don't exercise first thing it's not going to happen. That'll be next week's adjustment, I think; this week has had enough to adjust to with the normal stuff, let along all of 47's chaos.

Soreness

First purposeful walk on the treadmill after the cold. Bugged the hell out of my knee afterward, but some time spent beating up my shins and quads with a foam roller helped tremendously with that. As did ibuprofen. Here's hoping there's not a repeat cold any time soon; I'm tired of not breathing clearly.

The husband and I had lunch with friends to plan a trip to Boston this fall. Then I made some good progress on the next book for my leadership class while the husband was out a movie with another friend. He's more the social butterfly these days, which is a good thing. Monitored some work stuff that's pending for implementation tomorrow. I don't know that 47's team will appreciate how much people do at odd times because we have the equipment at home because of teleworking, and how much that capability will dry up because many people won't bother taking laptops home just to haul them back to the office the next day. Oh well.

Commuted to work, Metro was behaving. Got to pull out one of my favorite wah-wah court quotes ("However, nowhere does our Constitution extol the virtue of efficiency and nowhere does it command that all our laws be fiscally wise." Guadamuz v. Ash, 368 F. Supp. 1233, 1243 (D.D.C., 1973)). Was in the context of telling someone that it didn't matter that it would be cheaper if we paid for individual memberships for people to attend a conference, and that while buying the memberships plus the member registration rate was cheaper than paying the non-member rate, Congress said in law that we couldn't pay for memberships for individual feds, so they'd just have to suck it up and pay more money. Yes, sometimes the law is like that (and frankly in most instances the law makes sense because you don't want to use taxpayer funds to pay every employees' voluntary society membership dues, it's just that in this particular instance it happens to cost the taxpayer more). My job is weird.

Past that I walked on the treadmill this morning. I think my knee may be hyper-extending and thus causing more issues, so I'm going to dig out some of the lighter knee braces in my collection and see if one of them helps. The walk was fine, and I stretched a lot right after, so it was okay for most of the day. There's still a lot of ice out there so I was very careful where I put my feet, especially in the Metro parking lot, where ice melt had refrozen as black ice.

Quiet walk

Did a three mile walk this morning on the treadmill. The knee did well, which was nice to experience.

Finished sorting the donations with the husband's help. Now I need to document them so we can get rid of them on Wednesday when we're out and about.

Headed to the office on Tuesday, then we're escaping down Thursday to avoid most of the inauguration brouhaha, though we are driving back on Monday. I learned that being out of the city and watching it all from afar is more my cup of tea than being in the middle of the craziness that can strike. While I don't want to drive in it, here's hoping for a very wet and cold next Monday.

Late night

The husband was out late, and it's still gross outside from the snow, so I was up late last night to grab him from the Metro. But that's okay, because it meant I slept in this morning, so he had to walk himself to the Metro first thing to get to work. Karma.

Still walked on the treadmill, still made my morning meetings (that I'd forgotten until the work computer dinged at me), still got a lot of work done. Today was more of a 'leading people' day than substantive legal work, which is okay by me.

Then it was picking up the husband from the Metro, grabbing the weekly haul of comics, and enjoying pasta at the Italian place next door to the comic shop. I'll pay for the pasta tomorrow, but it was tasty. Apropos of that I ordered a new enzyme supplement that's supposed to help with digesting FODMAPs, and is aimed squarely at the ones that I react to, so here's hoping that's useful once it arrives.

Feedback

I decided for a variety of reasons to switch from my Apple watch as my daily watch to a Garmin watch instead. I've long used Garmin for sports-specific efforts, or step tracking, but not as a daily watch. One of the things the Garmin does in the morning when I first wake up is give me a readout on level of effort, recovery, etc., and it includes a suggested workout for the day. This morning it told me it was happy with my level of sleep (news to me, since I was up and down with a certain female cat who couldn't decide where on me she wanted to sleep), and recommended a 45 minute base building run. I audibly snort-laughed when I read it. Thankfully the husband was already awake. I turned that into a 45 minute walk on the treadmill, instead, which felt good. Also had my first successful test of listening to an audio book while walking; the previous attempt I was later told by the husband was a dreadful audio book so he wasn't surprised it didn't work. I have never been completely sold on them, but decided to give it a go when a news email from someone I followed mentioned the book series (The Codex Alera by Jim Butcher), which I have read several times now, and that they had enjoyed the audio books on long drives. One chapter down.

Windy start

Windy start to the new year. Walked outside after lunch (Denny's, which was chaos; I tipped our poor waitress very well). Walk went well, had one spot where a gust threatened my balance, but kept my feet okay and kept going. Slightly longer walk today since it was the last "warm" day for the near future (47F/8C) as a cold front brings possible snow this upcoming weekend.

In a very rare showing we were at the comic shop before they opened at 11, and were not the first to get there. I grabbed a dessert drink from the Starbucks down the shopping row while we waited (sugar cookie latte, with sprinkles).

Now the husband is making homemade hotdog buns in a new pan I got him for Xmas. Yes, it's easier to buy them at the store, but this seemed like something fun for him to try. From the cursing I'm hearing from the general direction of the kitchen it might not be as fun as intended, but I'm guessing they'll still come out tastier than store brand, just from the ingredient list.

Not late

We will not be doing a late night tonight. The husband and I both expressed that we'd prefer to sleep at the normal time, so after finishing this past season of Only Murders in the Building (so good!) we both retired to our offices to wind down on daily tasks. I got my bullet journals for work and home set up for the new month (kept separate for work records reasons), and did a little reminiscing and planning in both. There are fireworks going off somewhere in the distance, little pops as the show goes on.

We also had a summer-like thunderstorm right around dinner time that set off a tornado warning south of us, and had hail to the east of us in Annapolis. The thunder and heavy rain was more than enough; glad we missed the more exciting stuff.

Got outside to walk today instead of the treadmill. Post-lunch walk with a stop into the local organic grocer at the end to pick up some sundries. Felt good to get out - high 50s, and the sun was nice. We're about to get pummeled with cold by the end of this week, so I'm enjoying the pleasant outdoors time while I can.

So farewell to 2024, and here's hoping 2025 is good for all of us.
legalmoose: (Default)
Got a ton of books for Xmas, so trying to sort & prioritize those. Also have a massive backlog of comic books, dating back to the training at the beginning of this month (I would estimate a couple dozen in queue).

Walked on the treadmill this morning. Waiting for a big Amazon order to show up "by 10pm". The husband is downstairs trying out one of his Xmas gifts from me, an adult, exercise version of the 90s "skip it" toy. It sounds like he's having fun, and is out of breath from it.

I'll hop onto the work computer tomorrow to monitor stuff and clear out my inbox (so many reminders and news items await), but leave the out-of-office on so people don't bother me. Glad I figured out how the 'delay sending' thing works in Outlook so I can have stuff go through on Thursday if I write anything up tomorrow.

I'm definitely my mother's child - found a third batch of misplaced stocking stuffers this morning (she regularly forgets where she stashed Xmas gifts, and would find them weeks or months later). Really need to do a better job finding a consistent place to put those. These will get handed off when we see them next month for a family event.

My knee is still not at 100%; some days it's 95, some it's 80. Likely need to up my game on strengthening exercises. In the meantime I've been walking on our treadmill at some point during the day, and taking the speed up into more aerobic territory, according to my Garmin watch. Probably could've walked outside today, but I was trying out old hiking shoes from the closet that I hadn't worn in forever and I wanted to be at home in case I needed to bail and switch shoes. The hikers did fine, probably better than my usual Timberlands for an extended walk, so I'll keep them in the rotation.

Settled

We did, in fact, settle on "silent migraines" as the cause of the incidents I had from early December of last year through mid-February of this year. None of the blinding pain, but some of the side effects that mimicked stroke symptoms (dizziness, numbness). The two ocular migraines clinched it, since there was no damage present on any of the imaging we did of my brain. Bodies are such fun.

Did not make it through to interviews for the Deputy slot this go round, and after they failed the search for other reasons I chose not to re-apply when they re-issued the announcement. I think they're at the interview stage, but I'm also not participating in that process (staff frequently helps out with resume review and/or interviewing candidates, and other attorneys are doing so). At this point I'm going to hunker down in my nice little mostly apolitical agency and see what November-January brings. Depending on which way that goes I may decide to look elsewhere or I may just settle down and decide that they pay me well enough and I can focus on other things rather than worry about supervising again.

The knee is better, but still not to running stability. I'm slowly increasing walking speed, but it still has stability issues at times when I turn corners or the like. I've used a set of ropeless jump ropes a few times to test the boundaries of how much I can bounce on my feet. That, in conjunction with biking and walking, is my exercise these days.

Took a knitting class on basic two-color brioche knitting and finished a hat this past week, in record time for me (a week!). Pictures over on Flickr, as well as some of the long fingering weight single-color (at-a-time) brioche scarf I've been working on since (checks Ravelry) February of last year. I'm on the last color block of four for the scarf, so almost done. I have another scarf on the needles for Metro knitting, and a hat and a blanket in the immediate next queue. I took a crochet class back in March to get some hands-on help and learn some of the basic steps there, but I haven't done anything past the first project yet. Will probably try and whip out some dishcloths first.

Maybe

Still haven't figured out what to do with some of the stuff I cleared out of the trunks. Do I really need my merit badge sash? No. My Eagle Scout medal? Yes. But what to do with the stuff I'm keeping? Display it? Stick it in storage for another thirty years? I may set the husband loose on display options, that's more up his alley than mine.

I did decide to apply for my boss' job as Deputy GC. That application went in last Friday, and the announcement closed yesterday. It's funny, since talking with her about it she's definitely pulled back the curtain more on the workings of the office and the agency, especially our current hiring needs & process.

In health news, I've had a couple appointments, a couple events, and a new diagnosis of sorts. Saw neurology at another facility for an intake for an EEG later this month. Was not best pleased about how they handled the process (they literally just snail mailed me an appointment card with a time & date and no further information about what the appointment was for. Dorks), but the doctors were fine. Took the 30-day monitor off early (by about 6 days) because it had irritated my skin too much where the contacts were. But the neuro indicated that she had not gotten any alerts from it, so it's fairly safe to assume there was no sign of atrial fibrillation; we'll see for sure once they get the equipment back and send her the final report. The second neurology office apparently made noises to her about an implantable three year monitor and we nixed that. No thank you.

Had two eye incidents on the 25th and the 2nd, where I got what appeared to be an after-image in my right field of vision that gradually expanded in a crescent out and to the right until it faded completely, all in about twenty minutes. Annoyed me the first time, freaked me out the second time. Saw an ophthalmologist yesterday to check that out, and he pretty quickly diagnosed it as an ocular migraine, but examined my eyes and found no other issues with the retinas, etc. And he said that while he was no neurologist, in his experience if I'm getting ocular migraines the other TIA-like symptoms (numbness, dizziness) might just be signs of migraines rather than strokes. I'm still going through the rest of the testing to rule stuff out, but I'd certainly prefer that these were migraines over strokes. I'd actually prefer to have none of it, but if I'm stuck with one I know which I'd choose.

The knee has done better the past two weeks. I pushed the orthopedist to be more aggressive at our last appointment and he gave me a cortisone shot to ramp down the inflammation. I've been able to walk more easily, did a mile on the treadmill on Sunday (slowly), and have been able to bike again. Which is good because the knee brace was starting to irritate the skin on my leg.

First off, I'm fine. Don't you love when an entry starts out that way?

Tuesday morning (December 5th, 2023) around 10:30 I was standing in my living room when I had a sudden bout of dizziness, followed by numbness in my right hand and some tingling on the fingertips. Almost felt like my blood sugar had dropped out (the dizziness) and like I'd pinched something so my hand fell asleep. Both passed very quickly, then the hand numbness came back less severely and stopped again. And then the inside of my mouth and tongue on the right side got numb, at which point I started googling stroke and heart attack symptoms, and drove myself over to the local urgent care center. The symptoms were all resolved at that point, in less than ten minutes, but I still wanted to get checked out. They took me back immediately and examined me, then advised me to go to an emergency room.

Drove home, grabbed some things in anticipation of a long wait, summoned an Uber ride, texted the husband to let him know what was up, and went to the ER at the hospital attached to the university he works at, even though it's twice as far as the two closest. It also happens to be in the same network as the urgent care center, so they had all of my info from the earlier check in. The husband met me there, the team again jumped in on me pretty quickly - you say/describe "stroke symptoms" and medical professionals' eyes get big and they immediately start doing things. CT scan that afternoon, then they checked me in that afternoon for an overnight stay for more tests and observation. The poor husband had to return home for the tools to get my piercings out so I could have an MRI, which happened around 12:30am (hospital corridors are much less busy at that hour). Echocardiogram with bubble contrast was late morning on Wednesday, plus constant EKG monitoring and more blood draws than I care to think about over the course of the day.

Tested, prodded, and evaluated, the verdict was that I probably had a "low-impact transient ischemic attack (TIA)", a kind of stroke-like event that quickly resolved itself. No damage, tests all came back normal, not a stroke, but now I get some new medications (baby aspirin and a statin) and a longer discussion about all of this with my primary care physician at a pre-existing appointment on Monday, at which I was already going to be discussing slightly elevated blood pressure (which has not been helped by the lack of ability to do a lot of cardio because of my knee dislocation in September).

All-in-all I'm doing okay now. I feel fine, and other than needing some more sleep everything seems to have returned to status quo ante. I'm annoyed at the elevated blood pressure and adding yet another drug to the morning mix (I hate that I have to take pills to function), but the results came out well for what happened, and I'm glad I got it all checked out and will get an appropriate treatment plan. And maybe a new doctor to add to the deck? Because as you age doctors seem to be like Pokemon - gotta catch 'em all! Heh.
legalmoose: (Default)
I checked my work phone this morning, mainly to look at scheduling, and ended up taking care of two "emergencies" that people were hopping about this morning, then promptly dumped it on the charger to ignore it once more. They can have my time when I'm back on the clock Wednesday. I did end up having to reschedule a doctor's appointment because the original one is on the day they chose for out office holiday party while I was out on break. No biggie, thankfully. Still need to find out when my current 90 day full-time-remote status dies (next week, I think). I think I'm capable of commuting in now, but I'll make sure to take the crutch with me for it.

Ortho at the end of the week. Vet for the cats tomorrow. So I'll be working Wednesday and Thursday, but off the rest of the week, added to the week off last week. Has been a nice break. Knee is progressing still, but definitely not back to normal. I'm able to bike on a stationary trainer now, so that's becoming my default cardio. The new Garmin GPS watch I bought in August for running works well with the bike accessories, so at least that wasn't a total waste.

Desperately behind on comics. Like dozens of issues behind at this point. Even reading 4-5 a day I'm still falling behind because of the backlog. Clearly we have a comics problem.

On the third color of my four-color brioche scarf, finally. Just in time to get more yarn for a blanket the husband asked for (which I'm glad I grabbed, because the plum base he wanted is not showing as available any more on the site).

Xmas is all up, and we're the envy of our street (which apparently got me added to a group text that I hadn't been on before). Added some strings going from the roof to the group floor, framing the house and windows (lines from the balcony edge straight down to the top of the garage/front door), and some blinking rainbow candy canes for the front walk. And a manual timer to turn them on at 4:30pm and off at 7:30am, roughly around dusk and dawn.
legalmoose: (Default)
Saw my sister-in-law and niece off this morning, after they popped down for the holiday weekend.

Made some homemade pumpkin spice coffee additive last night (1.5 cups sugar, 1.5 cups water, bring to boil over medium heat, whisk in 4 teaspoons pumpkin spice blend and 1/4 cup pumpkin puree, lower heat to simmer for 20 more minutes. Strain through a fine mesh sieve (and cheesecloth, if you have it, to further reduce the solids) and add 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract. Stores in the fridge for up to a week). Also made toddy coffee concentrate, so had homemade iced pumpkin spice lattes this morning (1/2 cup concentrate, 3/4 cup milk, 2 Tablespoons PSL mix). Was tasty. I'm normally a black coffee drinker, so anything beyond that is exotic for me, but this was a nice treat. And the SIL was impressed, which is what really counts.

PT this afternoon. I have some pitting edema going on, meaning there's still a lot of extra fluid in the knee, so if that's still there at the end of next week I get to ask the orthopedist about that. Flexion was about the same as last week, which may be related to the extra fluid at this point.

Short week last week (and weird because of the almost-government-shut-down), short week this week. My new attorney shadow gets here in two weeks; it's someone I recruited from my old agency, so I know I'll work well with him. Looking forward to training him on the new agency, and a new area of law, as well as passing off some of the stuff that I'm not as well versed in but that he has much more experience with.

Oooh, we played Uno Flip last night and really enjoyed it. The husband and I own it, but hadn't played it, and it was quite a fun variation on the regular uno. Both sides of the cards are playable, a light side and a dark side, and every now and again people can make the deck flip from one to the other, which also flips all the cards in your hand. Kept things lively.

Got some more of the Halloween stuff put up, including the green-purple-orange light strings we bought last year but didn't get up (maybe we bought them at the end of the season on sale? I don't remember why they didn't get put up). Our neighbor does a much better job with it than we do, but we outshine them at Xmas. ;)
