The case of the missing notifications

I keep forgetting to post about this: we've been troubleshooting the "missing notifications" problem for the past few days. (Well, I say "we", really I mean Mark and Robby; I'm just the amanuensis.) It's been one of those annoying loops of "find a logical explanation for what could be causing the problem, fix that thing, observe that the problem gets better for some people but doesn't go away completely, go back to step one and start again", sigh.

Mark is hauling out the heavy debugging ordinance to try to find the root cause. Once he's done building all the extra logging tools he needs, he'll comment to this entry. After he does, if you find a comment that should have gone to your inbox and sent an email notification but didn't, leave him a link to the comment that should have sent the notification, as long as the comment itself was made after Mark says he's collecting them. (I'd wait and post this after he gets the debug code in but I need to go to sleep and he's not sure how long it will take!)

We're sorry about the hassle! Irregular/sporadic issues like this are really hard to troubleshoot because it's impossible to know if they're fixed or if they're just not happening while you're looking. With luck, this will give us enough information to figure out the root cause for real this time.

Mayonnaise

(thinking about this entry caused me to discover I hadn't posted the catching up entry)

Let no one tell you that mayonnaise is difficult to make. It is not. Most sources online will tell you to go through this complicated drill, getting the eggs to room temperature, drizzling oil slowly into a food processor, and watching nervously in hopes that the emulsion will take. Pure poppycock.

All you need is a quart sized mason jar and an immersion blender. Toss in one and a quarter cups of a neutral oil (canola, vegetable or "light tasting" olive oil), one large egg, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon ground mustard, 2 tablespoons lemon juice, and blend the stuff right in the mason jar. Easy peasy. If it doesn't come together, something is wrong with your ratios (i.e., you put too much oil in) or something is wrong with one of the ingredients. I know this because I had two batches not come together this afternoon because the oil was off. Switched oils (with fresh other ingredients, naturally), and voila, came together like a champ. Hardest part is getting the immersion blender blade assembly out of the jar and scooping the mayo off of it and into the jar.

When last I posted I was getting ready to head to Texas to visit my family back in early March.

Got to the airport (BWI - Thurgood Marshall Baltimore Washington International airport), got parked, got through TSA without a hitch. Then apparently sometime between sitting down and boarding it began to snow. So they had to de-ice the plane. Then it began snowing harder, which meant they needed to re-de-ice the plane using a different, stronger de-icing treatment. Sat on the plane while they did all that, then finally got in the air. Flight itself was fine, but as we were approaching it became clear there was no way in hell we were going to make our connection. United rebooked us to a later flight while we were still trying to get off the first one, because our original flight finalized boarding while we were still deplaning.

Then somehow we wandered through two terminals at the Houston airport that were ... rough. The first looked like the basement of an old municipal buildings: concrete, cinderblock walls, scuffed up earth tones, etc. Caught a shuttle from that one one to the other, which looked slightly better, but still in desperate need of a refresh. Caught some lunch from a no-name sports bar, and halfway through the meal we got told we were being moved to yet a third terminal. Thankfully it was an easy rail ride to that one, which was okay, but still nothing to write home about. In the air for one of the smoothest rides I've had on a small plane, and down to McAllen.

Visited, enjoyed seeing people. Took the three nieces to lunch one day with just them and us so we could talk to them without their parents or mine. Parents were okay. Did get my Dad set up with the hearing aid function on the air pods I'd gotten him for Xmas, which definitely helped his level of involvement, since he could finally hear people. On the other hand, he's also managed to alienate all three of his granddaughters by being a jerk to live with (my brother, his wife, and their three girls all live in a 5 bedroom house with my parents). *sigh* What a mess. But, overall, a nice visit over the long weekend.

The Sunday before we were scheduled to leave it got up to 102F/38.6C (!!!!!). A bit warm, especially since it was snowing when we left Maryland. We were supposed to fly out Monday, then the weather people got themselves all up in a lather over spring thunderstorms and tornado warnings, and air travel turned into a disaster. They got so worked up that schools back in Maryland were closing at 2 or 3 in the afternoon to get everyone home, which meant that workplaces had to do the same. Before we even got to the airport Monday morning we'd gotten an alert that our flight was delayed from 9:30 to 10:50. At the airport it was further delayed to noon, then quickly cancelled altogether. Apparently things were backing up in Houston, with nothing being able to go further east, so they started limiting what could come in. We rebooked as soon as we got the cancellation, but couldn't get out until Wednesday. Two extra days with the family.

With the rebooked flights we gave ourselves a lot of extra time in Houston to make sure we could make the connection. Early, early morning flight, which went off without a hitch, including the TSA process. We were a bit worried because it was the beginning of all the news reports about hours long delays at the major airports. McAllen is so small we sailed right through. When we arrived in Houston this time, though, we were convinced we'd been punked the last time - the C and D terminals have been renovated, very nicely, with good food choices, plenty of clean bathrooms, etc. Was a totally different experience than the first trip through. Was also glad we gave ourselves more time between flights - didn't feel as rushed/stressed about making the next batch, even if it meant more time in the terminal.

Isn't It Punny.....

Yesterday I was not at all hungry. I ate fewer calories than most days by quite a bit. Today the scale says I gained a pound. You know how when you are on a strict diet and you go off of it for a few days and suffer no consequences? I think this is the opposite. I have had a long think about whether, if my current trajectory - same or gain - continues, whether or not I'd keep taking the drug. 1. It's not going to continue. I will lose. and 2. I think I'd leave it up to my doctor to decide. So, I'm not going to worry about it.

The baseball game last night was fraught with all kinds o' shit. First of all we are playing the Astros - the cheating Astros - who, this season are the LOSING Astros. Of course the Mariners are also losing but that, we can live with. We are enjoying the heck out of the Astros' slide down. Their pitcher last night walked in a run in the first inning and did not make it to the 2nd. We won but only because the Astros are so bad.

BUT the really good news is that the only broadcaster I like - Dave Valle - does not do a lot of games but did last night's and it was so good. Plus, because they generally use the same color guy for the series and we are playing the Astros for 4 games, we have him for the next 3! He makes the bozo regular guy better, too. So very nice.

Google, can we just agree that any email I get written in Hindi is FUCKING SPAM?????

Volleyball this morning was exceptionally excellent. It was just a very fun game for everyone there. Massive laughs and some good play, too.

One of the players is 96 year old retired OB/GYN doctor, Tina. In the locker room after, she told me she had gotten one of my rabbits (Martha's distribution). And she loved it so much. She gave it to a dear friend who loved it even more. But, now she didn't have one. Any chance she could get another?

I decided last night that the chickens were no longer doing it for me and I wanted to go back to mini monsters. But, now, I will need to stop and do a bunny. I'm sure glad I took pictures because I can barely remember how I made them!

Time for elbow coffee.

Again.....

So i had my appointment with Occupational Medicine this morning.
Very nice doctor.
When I told him I had just been to Orthopedics and was told that I couldn't see them and had to see Occupational Medicine first, he laughed and said that's not true.
Who do you believe any more...
Anyway, he examined me and had some different thoughts about possible problems.
One outside chance possibility is a fracture of the patella or tibia.
He ordered therapy and suggested an MRI.

So if anybody is really bored Monday morning, I will gladly allow you to take my place.

I have both a CT Scan of the chest and now an MRI Scan of my left knee. :o :o :o

Any takers.....

A visit to a biscuit factory museum!

Yesterday, Mr Cee and I went to London with our U3A 'London Explorers' group to visit the Peek Frean's museum.

The museum is in a room in the old factory site (the factory finally closed in 1989), which now houses lots of companies, including the 'Actor's Exchange' (Mr Cee suggested if you weren't happy with your actor, you could bring them in to exchange them *eyeroll*).  The museum is run by two volunteers and former employees of Peek Freans, and our guide was very knowledgeable.

Peek Frean's began production of sweet biscuits (which our US friends would call cookies) in 1857. Up until then, a biscuit would have been a twice-baked hard tack biscuit taken on long sea voyages to supplement the lack of bread for sailors. Jack Peek came up with the idea of incorporating sugar into a delicate, sweet biscuit, and the company grew from there, producing favourites such as the sweet custard cream, garibaldi, bourbon biscuits and savoury snacks such as twiglets.

Photos of fun memorabilia under the cut.

It was a tiny but very interesting museum (and free to visit). They had original handwritten books detailing complaints, which made fascinating reading. So many customers reported finding hair in their chocolate biscuits! LOL!

I can also report that we got to eat some biscuits! I had a chocolate bourbon biscuit, which was delicious!

I ended up making a Costco trip yesterday. They now have this little graphic on my digital card that says, rather loudly, 34 years! And when you beep in, the little lady says "34 years?! Wow and thank you!" They are, clearly, counting the Price Club years which is kind of funny. Google confirms that the Costco/Price Club deal was in 1993. Anyway, I needed coffee and chicken wings and I also got some eggwiches. 3 things. I always consider it a win when I can carry out my Costco purchases in a normal grocery bag. They moved the self service area to the complete other side of the checkout so that you cannot even see it and assume they killed it. I was in line and griped about their removing it when a chipper Costocoian piped up, oh it's just over there! Bite me, lady, I'm already to the front of this line.

It is really ridiculous for me to pay for a Costco membership and I think this may be the last time. 34 years is enough.

I got up this morning and had coffee and an eggwich and was internetting and thinking about not going swimming when I just stopped and put on my suit and went before the not going thought could fully form. It was a very good swim. I've increased my time a little so that I am now swimming at least 1/2 mile without stopping.

My Peacock subscription is running out at the end of this month. I paid $60 for a year which I'd gladly do again except now they want $170. And, honestly, there isn't enough shit there to justify. I like Law and Order and Jeopardy. Are they worth $14 a month? Nope. If their baseball coverage didn't suck so much, I might even consider it but nope. So at least for now, it's buhbuh Peacock. I did resub to Netflix. I haven't had it for nearly a year so I have a lot of lovely catch-up to do.

My cell plan ran out of data yesterday which means once I leave the lovely confines of wifi, I've got a dead phone... until tomorrow when it rejuices. I think I can make it. No plans to go anywhere today.

All my Thursday stuff is done.

It didn't flash with me until I opened the fridge this morning. My doctor put in the new Wegovy prescription and NovoCare (the pharmacy I use for it) sent me their text. They send a link for me to use to pay and tell them when to deliver it. I've always picked the first available date and did that yesterday. This morning, when I took out the next pen, I realized that next week, I'll get 4 more pens and there are still 4 pens in the fridge. I think part of my mind believes shortage - like when Spiffikins had to work so hard to find Mounjaro. There is currently no Wegovy shortage and I don't really need to bank 8 weeks! Next time, I need to pay better attention.

The Mariners will be safe from another loss today only because they do not play. I am not happy about the game play but I'm actually enjoying the new broadcast. They gave up their own network at the end of the season and now have all their games on MLB.TV which has a feature that is great and works great. You can watch the TV broadcast and, simultaneously, listen to the radio broadcast and easily flip back and forth. It makes the games so much more palatable.

Nothing much going on today. I'm falling behind in my chicken making. The demand is outpacing the production. So there will be chicken making.

I just got a phone call from Occupational Medicine this morning.

Seems the lady I spoke to yesterday screwed things up.
She marked me down as not being an employee.

My question to her is, Why the bloody hell would I call you if I wasn't an employee.

The lady that called today was like, you are an employee right?
I said, Yeah, for the last 45 years. :o

So I now I have an appointment tomorrow morning to see one of their doctors to see what my next step will be.

My prediction?
They are going to have to try and "treat" me through their office.
Which is laughable from past experiences.

Part 2.....

I just got off the phone with Occupational Medicine.
They are the department that I need to go through to get my knee looked at before I am allowed to see Orthopedics.

Hold On To Your Hats...

My request for an appointment will go up for review and can take up to a week for an answer.

It will either be accepted and I will get a call to make an appointment.

Or it will get rejected and I will get a message stating so.

I had my appointment with my doctor yesterday. When last we met, she said that the Medicare coverage of Wegovy was looking like April. Almost immediately that changed to July and now she's saying maybe Januaray and it's based on your BMI. BUT, they are planning on using your BMI as it was when you first started on the drug so if/when it ever happens, I'll be qualified. $350 to $50 will be a nice change but until then, I'm thinking of it like a car payment.

I can get a faster car for the same payment so she's going to increase the dosage for the next go round. I'm still several weeks away from the next go round so I thought I'd go back to tracking my calories for a while. Apparently she has lots of Wegovy patients. During our call, once we decided on dosage, my phone text beeped. Without thinking, I looked down. She said "Oh, that will be me - or my prescription rather." and it was. She said she's done enough of this that she now has a rhythm to how it all goes. I do like that she has good experience with the whole experience! She wants me to exercise more which I assured her was not going to happen. We'll meet again in July.

And so today I start the tracking - new app - Journable. This one really only tracks what you eat. It also can track exercise and weight but it's easy to ignore those bits. Very simple, and easy. The photograph nailed my breakfast.

I noticed yesterday that the Google Play Store has a new feature - AI ask a question about this app. I've been asking "how much does using this app in the US cost?" - it's a lot better than downloading, installing and then digging around for what happens when the trial is done or your xx free times are over, etc. Also it tells you if there is a way around the stupid video ads. Quite nice.

I put the laundry in before I went to swim. And now between swimming, breakfasting, cutting Biggie's nails and generally futzing around, I have 13 minutes til it's time to hang and fold.

The baseball game is at 11 today. The Mariners have lost way more than they have won so far this year. Not pretty. The Food and Beverage meeting is at 2.

The Mariners lost... again. Volleyball was good. It's house cleaner day - yeah! Another lovely day at the cult.

Yesterday was the first morning that daylight hit my bedroom before 7. The next few or really few plus months will require sleeping with a blindfold which is annoying but it does the job. I think, today, I'll switch out my comforter to the one that's not quite so thick.

Our wifi, last night, was wonky. I finally had to abandon the library book I was listening to and pick up the audible one. Most of the library books I want to read cannot be downloaded so wonky wifi means wonky listening or no listening. And due to the power outage a few weeks ago, I'm running perilously close to my cell plan data limit. It gets revived on Thursday so I don't really want to pony up the $10 needed to get more data. The plan is for 5 GB. Usually, I use way less than 2. I had already downloaded the Audible book so I just listened to it.

I miss Jim Across The Hall. It's still weird to open my front door and know he's not even there. Not a peep from anyone about his stuff or when they will start moving it. They only have a couple of weeks. They may be able to 'buy' extra time. I don't know.

I have three different yarn projects going. The toys - currently chickens but I could go back to monsters at any time. An afghan - knitted in very large mitered squares and a vest with a funky waffle pattern - crochet. I'm enjoying the diversity. My plan is to do two toys every day and then pick up which ever one of the others I feel like. Both are pretty good for TV watching - I can do them mostly by feel. When I hit a spot on any of them that needs eye, I just turn the TV off and turn the book on.

What An F'ing Waste Of Time.....

Took me 2 months to get in to see Orthopedics about my knee that I fell on way back in December in the employee parking ramp at work.

My appointment call time was 8:45 am today.
I didn't get called back to the exam room until 9:20 am.
Then another 10 minutes waiting until the therapist who was working with the doctor came in to exam me.
Went through every thing with her and then she went to get the doctor.

Drum Roll Please..............

There has been a hiccup. Not on your part.....

Because this is a workman's comp issue, I am not allowed to directly see Orthopedics.
I have to go through the Clinic's Preventative Medicine department before I can see anybody else.
WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now I have to wait to get an appointment to see Preventative Medicine.

Needless to say, I am NOT a Happy Camper.

I am not going to the pool today. I am taking the day off. For no good reason.

A few months ago, Jim Down The Hall had a weird experience. His apartment is very large and has two full bathrooms but he rarely uses most of it. His housecleaner was working in there one day and came to him and asked "what do you want me to do about the bathroom?" Completely confused, he went to the bathroom she was talking about - his second one that he never uses - and saw that the glass shower door had completely shattered all over everywhere. Weird and Wild.

Yesterday, Bonny came in and said "come see my shower door"... ??? ok. And, yep, it had shattered, but mostly in place. She said she called security as soon as she noticed it and the security guy came up immediately. There was a towel hanging over the door and as soon as he touched the towel to move it, some of the glass fell out so he stopped. So mostly it was all in the door. On a Sunday. Easter. But, maintenance was up there getting ready to at least make it safe to go in. Wild and grateful for quick responses.

She said the security guy was the new one and it was his first day. Welcome!!

I just got a text from Martha. Martha has a daughter I have never met but said daughter is always sharing cute little knitted and crocheted toys with me through Martha. The original bunny idea came from her and at least one other one. Anyway, Saturday, Martha took several of the chickens and took one to her daughter yesterday. When she got there, her daughter has a surprise for her, a chicken she had crocheted! hahaha

Tomorrow I have my first Wegovy checkup with my doctor. I'll be very interested to hear what she has to say.

Wednesday is a Food & Beverage Committee meeting - the agenda is very short. The current jihad is salt. Everyone knows what's best. And I don't care.

The Mariners are playing in Texas which means 3 days of early games which is lovely.

I finished Proof by Jon Cowan. It was a decent story not very well told. The audio book had this hilarious quirk. The reader was good except. One of the characters was a police woman from Scotland and he made her sound like she was from Cape May, New Jersey and had a speech impediment. It was very jarring.

I have the next of the five that the librarian recommended checked out and queued up.

Time to get this day started.
