The husband and I were out running some errands when my phone started lighting up with texts from friends about the news at the Capitol (and making sure we were okay). Another time I am so, so grateful we moved outside the city. As much as I love DC, and loved the location of the old apartment for many things, the worry it brought at times was not fun. Mind you, while it's 13 or so blocks from the Capitol as the crow flies, you have to cross a highway to get between the two, so it's not like the rioters would've been at our (old) gates. Possible, but highly improbable.
It was hard not to get choked up as I checked on other friends to make sure they were okay. It felt almost like 9/11, though back then you couldn't get through the (very early) cell networks to get any news or get through to friends, in that the news in DC was horrible, scary, and way too close to home.
