The rest of the holiday visit went well. The drive back on Saturday took an extra hour with holiday traffic. I do love how the "slow lane" on the far right usually becomes the faster of the three-to-four lanes once traffic hits a snarl, and predictably so. Slight detour to pick up comics on the way home, then back to the kitties. Ezri is currently looking over my shoulder (literally, propped up on the cat-window shelf in my office, with front paws on the back of my chair), and has been extra clingy since we got back. Benjamin has done his usual job of keeping the bed to himself at night, and warming my toes.
It looks like the next home project is going to be the water heater. It's around 11-12 years old, so it's probably getting near the end of the useful life, but again the previous owners seem to have never done preventative maintenance, so yay. I've long complained that the hot water was variable and not terribly hot, but apparently it took having real hot showers at a hotel (and a luke warm shower this morning) to make the husband notice that ours was not up to snuff. I played with some of the settings, and drained some water out of it at the heater itself (which we're apparently supposed to do on a monthly basis to clear silt & sediment, according to the manufacturer's manual), and that seems to have gotten it back into 'actually hot' territory, but I think we're going to call someone soon to come in and take a look. The joys of home ownership.
I also think I'm going to start a small paper "house journal" to document when we do things, to have a record to be able to say "hey, this is when you replaced this" or "this is when you noticed that". Much like the notes I make prior to my annual physical ("on X date this body part started feeling this way..."). Memory is fickle, so records help.
