I caught the last blinkin' fish in Animal Crossing this evening, after having a couple of my nieces over to take advantage of a visiting character. Thank heavens I no longer have to fish in the game, if I don't choose to.

Fishing in video games never made much sense to me. It's usually just a 'listen for the sound/look for the movement and hit a button' thing, but the Wii platform took it to the extreme with their motion controllers. And the mechanics of it never worked as described, they were always either too jumpy, or not responsive enough. Either way it Just. Didn't. Work. I believe one winter I screamed, "this is not fucking entertaining!" at the top of my lungs as I struggled with a mandatory fishing thing in Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess, likely scaring all of my neighbors who were enjoying the quiet of a snow day off from work (back when those were a thing). Fishing and driving in video games are really the only things I absolutely loathe, and I'll put video games down and walk away (looking at you, Watch Dogs), unless they're compelling enough to continue on or the driving is minor enough to power through (looking at you, Arkham Knight).

I always wondered if there was some sort of Japanese cultural touchstone that we were just missing. Fishing subgames within Sonic Adventure was the "this cannot be a coincidence" moment for me.
