Moved up

Managed to move my next orthopedist appointment to next Friday versus a week from Monday, and they gave me a stronger NSAID to start tomorrow. Going back to a bigger brace is helping, too.

Missed lunch because of a last minute meeting, but managed to finish something that we needed to get done for the agency head, so yay? Also, no real news on the budget yet, though other agencies' plans have leaked to the press and they're pretty draconian. I would not be surprised if ours was half of our current level, which would be consistent with the public plans that the think tanks announced prior to the start of this administration.

Ordered in dinner as soon as we got home, watched some fun British TV, then read some.

I don't want to pry too much, but do you work for the government?

As I started the journey back to my wife's country from America to Asia, I ran across some fellow neck-beards at the airport where I started my journey. They worked for TSA in the IT department. This was mid-February. I asked them broadly, "Is there any fear that in the near-term you guys may not have a job?" And the eldest of them said to me, "Every single day."

Not to sound whiny, but in my decade abroad, I always thought to myself, "If I ever went back to America. I might only do it to work for the government." But with this new administration changing the way things work, it feels like this is not an option.

I do. I work at a small government agency as an attorney. This is my third agency, been here a little over 5 years now (got here about a month and a half before we all got sent home for COVID in 2020). Overall I've been with the government since late 1998, which means I hit the milestone of working for the feds for half my life last December. I've mostly specialized in appropriations (government money) law, but have handled a smattering of other areas as well.

Completely agree with the folks who work for TSA - it really feels like a crap shoot as to whether this administration will decide to randomly fire people at any given day. But I remind myself that I signed up to defend the constitution, and to serve the public, and I plug along as well as I can. It's rewarding work, even with 47's shenanigans, and it keeps me out of trouble.
