For those of you outside DC, it may interest you to know that the citizens of the District of Columbia have no representation in Congress.

This column from the Washington Post contains some of the best news to date on the struggle for equal voting rights in Congress for the District.

Other than that, I urge you all to contact your senators and representatives and let them know that you do not support the continued denial of voting rights for the citizens of the District of Columbia

I hardly know anybody who has ever personally written his/her US Representative, Senator, or President about anything at all. Strangely enough, about half of the politicians I've personally written never responded to me -- as though they were too busy to answer the occasional sincere letter from a constituent.

I admire you for asking people to write ...

Democracy is a lost art form in the United States. People would rather watch TV or play on their computers ... Politicians would rather go to fundraisers and buy TV ads.

That's all true, and a major underlying cause of it (which I understand intimately) is our increased mobility. If you're living somewhere new every year, you don't make much of a connection with your local leadership. So, writing to a stranger that you've heard of, and feel at some level you know, is pretty awkward. Writing to someone you'd have to look up (as I would) is even worse.

But at the same time, totally worthwhile.

I wrote President Bush back in October, he never responded ... when I would write President Clinton he always responded.

I guess when you are 80% popular you don't need to write back.

It's one of those things we, as non DC residents, never think about. It is absolutely absurd, and should be changed.
