One of the things I hate most about being an attorney are the damned Continuing Legal Education (CLE) Courses. Because I'm in a very specialized field, Federal Appropriations Law, there are almost no courses in my area of expertise, so I end up sitting through courses on negotiation techniques, or evidence at trial, none of which have any bearing on my life past getting me the credits I need to continue to keep my law license.
Thankfully the Department of Justice's Office of Legal Education offers enough video tape seminars, and some other general seminars at their SC facility, for free, to get the necessary credits.
But really, how valuable is it to sit through a 30 year old video tape course? Does this really make me a better attorney? I think not.
I'm grousing because I was going over my CLE requirements for this year and I'm still short, so I just got my boss to sign the nominating forms for four classes, three video tapes in December and one 1/2 week thing in SC in July. A shame my cousin won't be on campus at USC-Columbia in July, I'd love to see her without her mother in tow. ;) Let's hope they accept me to all the classes; I kinda like keeping the bar license. I don't need all these credits for this year, some will carry over to next year, so I'm stuffing to knock these out so I'm not panicking like this at this time next year.
