Cat hair

You know how some lizards can release their tails, leaving them to twitch and confuse predators while they run off after getting caught?

I think my cats can do the same thing, only they shed another cat's worth of hair, leaving you holding a very large fuzzball while they go capering off. This became apparent this afternoon while attempting to clip their claws. Next thing I know, my nose is full of cat hair, the cat is nowhere in sight, and I can't figure out what happened.

Actually, I read something once about how cats can selectively shed; that is, when they get nervous or pissed or something, they can in fact release extra fur. I suppose that as a defense mechanism, it would make the "attacker" sneeze or brush away fur while kitty runs away...?
