Can one grow herbs (legal ones, like basil, rosemary, etc.) indoors? Do they need direct sunlight?

I want fresh basil, but I have no porch, and I don't think I can put the things right in the window unless I put in hooks and a hanging basket to keep the kittens away from them (they've already destroyed my violets).

Just curious...

Yep

You can raise basil and such indoors--they don't absolutely need tons of direct sunlight, but they will be the happier for it. Maybe you could have supervised "sunlight time" on the weekends. :)

Yes, you can, but you must keep them well away from any British comedy, or your Basil will be Fawlty.
