Federal Appeals Court Rules Pledge of Allegiance Unconstitutional

SAN FRANCISCO -- For the first time ever, a federal appeals court on Wednesday declared the Pledge of Allegiance unconstitutional because of the words "under God" added by Congress in 1954.

......

Interesting....

This is a good point:

"A profession that we are a nation 'under God' is identical, for Establishment Clause purposes, to a profession that we are a nation 'under Jesus,' a nation 'under Vishnu,' a nation 'under Zeus,' or a nation 'under no god,' because none of these professions can be neutral with respect to religion," Judge Alfred T. Goodwin wrote for the three-judge panel.

definitely. :P

Of course, one of my friends pointed out that this was ruled by the 9th Circuit Court, which according to him is "the most overturned of any of the appellate courts."

Will the money ("In God We Trust") be next?

Interesting perspective. I don't agree with you in the slightest - but I can accept that you feel that way. *hug* At least you take the time to think rather than just react.

No Separation in the UK

They don't have a Constitution, or a Bill of Rights, or an independent judiciary, or any sort of separation of church and state in the United Kingdom, so a ruling like this would seem alien to many in his country.

religion isn't fading away though. It's simply seperated from state mandate.

I'm glad!

I dunno

*thinks some more*

there isn't that much coverage of it over here
but it just seems like if ONE person thinks something then the whole thing has to change

obviously more than one person in this case
but sometimes they demand the stupiest thing in the name of equality and it just sounds more hypocritical

did that make sense?

*cuddles*

why are you feeling the need to post this same comment in different journals?

mmm because my opinion is the same regardless of which one of my friends post it in thier journals..they don't all have the same people listed as friends, nor do they read my friends list always.

As an agnostic, I could not GIVE less of a damn whether or not the Pledge has "under God" in its text or not. Really, did you EVER stop to consider the meaning of the words while you were in school, or did you just spout it out like I did. It didnt make me Christian. If you dont wanna say it, then dont.

There are SO many more important issues on dividing church from state that could be seen to before something like this. I mean, in some states they are teaching Biblical creationism as "History" or as a legitimate scientific approach to Origin of the Human Species. Now THESE are areas that we need to get at, not the stupid Pledge of Allegiance. All this opinion will do is galvinize the Far Right and much of the Center into yet ANOTHER tiresome frothing frenzy. What IS the POINT???
