Rode in

The bike ride in wasn't bad... until I got to the National Mall, where everything is closed off, in the most bizarre fashion, and I ended up cutting up 17th Street to Constitution and riding on the sidewalk (illegally, mind you) until I got to 9th, then up on Pennsylvania to 7th and into our garage here.

There was just no sense to the fences. One was even across the middle of the Reflecting Pool (the one in front of the Lincoln between it and the Washington Monument - think Forest Gump's scene with Jenny in the pool at the anti-war rally). Not exactly a lovely, scenic view.

For those of you not in the know, they're blocking off, fencing off, the National Mall and putting up security checkpoints for people to walk through to get onto the Mall for the fireworks, etc.

And what are these people supposed to do when, heaven forfend, something happens and they're trapped inside the fences? This is just ridiculous, it's gone too far

I think *some* of the fences are from the construction of the World War II Memorial being constructed on the other side of the reflecting pool from the Lincoln... it is an unsightly set of fences and barriers. Beyond that, yes, the are doing a damned stupid job protecting people on the Mall this weekend. Glad I'm headed to the beach!

You beat me to it. When I walked through there collecting water (the water in the Reflecting pool is SCARY btw. I dunno how they did that scene...) I noticed it. It's going up around the Rainbow Pool.

Rainbow. Yeah. Uh huh. We know where this'll go in 20 years...
