Yes, Ma'am

Marn got called "Ma'am" yesterday.

I learned long ago that one never addresses a woman, no matter her age, as "Ma'am," preferring instead the all-purpose "Miss." You can't go wrong with it, you can't inadvertently insult someone, and those women who would prefer a "Ma'am" are either greatly amused or greatly flattered. ;-)

For those of us who remember Absolutely Fabuluous:

Waiter: "Ma'am?"
Patsy: "--demosielle. Madamosielle!"

No, sorry, I have to jump in here. I hate being called "miss". I find it outright insulting because as far as I'm concerned, "miss" goes right along with "girl" just as "ma'am" goes with "woman". Being all of 26, I hardly take it as an implication that I'm over the hill when someone addresses me as "ma'am"; rather, I am pleased that they show me the respect to address me as an adult.
