Today is going by soooooooo slowly.

And I think our field offices here at the Big Government Agency must all be wondering who peed in my cherios this week. I have been one incredible hard-ass on following procedures, mainly because if they all ignore their procedures there are major statutory nastinesses that Congress will impose on us. Not something I want to see. So I'm fussing at them. And not relenting.

I'm getting similar reactions from the HRIS Specialist. Part of her job has been the personnel files, but with the reporting she's had to do, and various mergers and acquisitions along the way (for us, that means we get files from other companies, all of whom have different filing methods, and oh yeah, no one here has ever had any sort of filing method, so nearly all of the 2200 employee files are a) unique beyond just being about unique employees, and b) a complete mess. I'm finding a lot of things in the files that don't belong in there, and I've had several conversations with her about how when I'm filing things I think it's Very Important to do it right, rather than just toss the papers in the file haphazardly and then put the file away...you know, take a minute now to save five later. She just wants them put away because she's the person who gets asked for employee files, and it's such a mess in here that it sometimes takes a while to find things, and whoever does it has to go through multiple stacks of random paperwork to find things. I continue to point out that there's stuff in the piles from 3 or 4 years ago, and it's been there for a while and it hasn't been an emergency before, so there's no reason for it to be one now. We have this discussion about every day.

At the very least, our boss is more on my side on the issue - she agrees that we should take time to think about how to deal with it and sort through it all now, rather than tossing papers in files, which may make the piles disappear for now, but will almost certainly cause a huge headache in the long run.

*deep cleansing breath*
