Um, no..

Wrong, wrong, wrong.

Though, I suppose if they're healthy, more power to them.

But an ideal? *wince*

If any of them would like to have my fat siphoned off and given to them, though, they're welcome to it. :)

I'm caught between two ideals. Gar.

Oh please. I only read the headline, but I've already formed an opinion.

NO.

....

That article contains nothing but rationalizations for people to be unhealthy. I don't care how many guys have pot bellies from eating chicken nuggets at McDonald's, I'll still be into six packs.

Fat = No Self Control = Bad Person

Never mind that I can think of a specific friend of mine who is a regular yoga practitioner, rides his bike everywhere, eats like a bird, abstains from everything right down to caffeine, and sports a wonderfully generous, chunky physique that I was thrilled to get my hands on whenever he was in the mood to let me.

You're responding to something I never said.

You said that the article's glamorizing of potbellies rationalizes unhealthy behavior, which implies that one has to behave unhealthily to get one in the first place.

The intent of the subject line was just remind the people here of an all-too-common attitude: fat often gets conflated with unhealthy living, which gets conflated--if not on a conscious, rational level, on an emotional one--with neglectfulness, self-hatred, genetic unsuitability, etc. No fats, no fems is an all too common mantra, but we are, after all, fags. Lest we find a lesbian womb with 9 months of free time, our children are going to be adopted. So what's with the eugenic urges?

You're putting words into my mouth. The original article in question, and my comments, specifically mentioned eating chicken nuggets at McDonald's. My comments are therefore aimed at unhealthy behavior, not at fat people.

I did not say, nor do I believe, that fat=unhealthy behavior. The association is already in the public mind. Most people will therefore think that if obesity is ok, unhealthy behavior must also be ok.

Thing is, the article wasn't glamorizing obesity-- I think obesity might be, by definition, a level of body fat that over-taxes the body, regardless of how it got there. But there are a range of healthy lifestyles and body types beyond gym-toned asceticism, and it would be nice if they got some mainstream recognition.

I'm really sorry if I offended you. What really got me going in the original article was the implied suggestion that eating McDonald's is really ok, and to say otherwise is just repressive, backwards gay body fascism. I fully recognize that there's not just 6-pack and obese, and that there are many shades of gray in between.

We gotta substitute a new form of self-hatred for the old form, eh? Now that Sex = Good, we must have Fat = Bad. It helps if most Americans fall under the definition for "Bad". And it helps even more if the rest fail to live up to the ideal, even if they aren't exactly "Bad".

I can't stand mainstream gay or men's fitness magazines anymore. They promote self-hatred by idealizing anorexic steroid abuse.

Hey you! I'm glad to see you're okay, and I hope you're feeling better and getting lots of sleep now.

I'm OK, feeling better, sleeping LOTS more.

Please forgive me for not adding you back until I feel stronger. Right now I'm exploring some heavy things that I don't want to share with people I've not yet met in person. I definitely OD'd on LJ interactions the week before last.

Well I can understand this - TO A POINT. I don't agree with the overstatement of it all, but I do strongly agree that there should be less of a focus on the acheivement of "that perfect body". Health should come first of course, but (and keep in mind that this comes from an unashamed bear lover), I'd much rather be with a guy who happens to have a bit of a belly than one who spends 5 days a week in the gym after his successfull liposuction and 6 week round of testosterone shots.

Beauty comes from within.

This comes up with a funny regularity -- I think there are people who still believe that body fat indicates freedom from HIV. I'd welcome a loosening of standards but, as always, I'll believe it when I see it.
