I joined the YWCA downtown recently (two-three weeks ago?) and had gone swimming on a Sunday morning when they opened right after I joined (had to skip last week because I was recovering from going clubbing - sleep deprivation does not a happy Will make). It was pretty dead, I played around in the water to get refamiliarized with being in a pool (it's been years!), chatted with my friend Tracy and her friend Veronica as they did water aerobics. Not bad. Got checked out by some leering older gentleman in the shower room (he was probably shocked at the Prince Albert), went home, no big deal.

This morning, on the other hand, I was there 5 minutes before they opened (misjudged the time it took to bike down there), and about 5-10 minutes after I got in and started doing swim drills, the place was packed (well, as packed as the pool can get - 8 people, 2 people each to four lanes). And here I had been lured into thinking it was a nice, quiet place to swim as I try to get my bearings in the water again. ;) Wasn't bad, I did drills for about 45 minutes, then out, showered, and biked home.

I'm doing the Rock 'n Roll Half Marathon, 13.1 miles, at the end of August down in Virginia Beach. After I finish the training for that and the race itself, I'm going to switch my emphasis from almost all running (which is where it's been, on and off, for the past five years) to triathlon (swim, bike, run) and weights. I want to do triathlons, probably starting with one in the Spring. I have to get the swimming under control - I'm pretty rusty now, so am trying to drill good habits in and not merely repeat half-remembered bad habits.

In joining the Y I told myself I had a couple of goals:

1. Get the swimming portion of the triathlon down so there's no excuse to not sign up for one;
2. Start doing weights to strengthen my core body (torso mainly - used a lot in all three triathlon sports);
3. Vanity, vanity, vanity (have great legs, but my upper body is pretty scrawny);
4. Get back down to my 29 inch waist (which was last had 2 years ago) - see #3 above *grin*.

The fun part has been reorganizing my schedule and life to try and accommodate the change. I gave up drinking in April because it was interfering with my running, and I've been off caffeine for ages now (well, mostly off - I slip on occasion). The last time I went out clubbing with friends I spent most of the next week recovering from the lack of sleep and caffeine withdrawal, not to mention a case of strep, so I'm not doing that any time soon (and bars become soooooo dull when you're not drinking yourself, ya know?). Anyway, just trying to fit it all in has been fun. Has meant some changes, but changes for the better, IMNSHO.

And now, is time to go get some sun!
