So, decided to get one of those iPod thingeys. I guess this means I'll be spending more time ripping more of my CDs down onto the computer now. I only have a measley 2 gigs on there now, and the new thingey is going hold 40, so I need to get moving on more of my music. :)

I swear, though, they need one device (one ring to rule them all) that'll do everything: music, PDA, phone, etc. They're getting there, but the current ones aren't quite up to snuff yet. The Treo 600 comes closest, and I was soooo tempted to get one last fall, but the lack of wireless networking is a big drawback to me (I don't necessarily always want to have to connect through AT&T's network to check email, especially when I have my own at home, 'k?). And bluetooth is fine and dandy, but if you're using the same device to check email and phone messages, why bother?

So, one small step on a possible conversion to Apple. Though the news that PalmSource is going to drop support for synching with Apple OS (although, as the article mentions, you can buy another program to make it work with your Apple) is not happy stuff. Will have to see how that works, because I'm more wedded to the Palm OS than I am to either Windows or Apple OSX.

i've had mine two days now, it's pretty impressive. do you know you can use it as a removable harddrive too?

can i shamelessly send you a link to get one on amazon? That's where jason just got his new one and nicely contributed to my referral link (though I'm giving him money for music since we are sharing his music library).

You might enjoy the fact you can get audio books and programs on your ipod too.

i saw the ipods last time i was out technology-whoring and as much as i'd like one, i'm scared to death that i'll lose it due to its small size.

or that it'll become a really expensive teething toy for the child.

mommy wants cool toys too, dammit.

I currently use a Treo 600 and have my pop accounts forwarded to it automatically, which works well for me...I use an app (Snappermail) to poll the accounts on an every 15 min. basis. The device's greatest shortcoming for me personally is its lack of Bluetooth, as I have always used Bluetooth phones and have large amounts of money invested in various Bluetooth items.

I use pockettunes and real player one on the Treo, along with a memory card for mp3 storage -- I have relatively few mp3s and even less time for listening as I commute by car, but for the metro-riding downtown crew an iPod would prove to be a far more worthwhile investment on that front. I would agree with your assessment of the Treo, it comes close but not quite close enough. It suits my needs well and allowed me to finally ditch the Blackberry+phone combo I have relied upon for years...I am looking forward to the next thing.

If Sony-Ericsson would only come out with a Symbian-based smartphone WITH KEYBOARD....I hate stylus-driven devices.

Welcome to our cult!

I really love my 40Gb iPod. I've got hundreds of my CD collection already burned to it (though now I'm going back and reripping them all to AAC rather than MP3, for the better quality at lower file size), plus a number of songs and albums I've downloaded from iTunes, and still have about 7Gb left. I've been wanting to get the Belkin media reader attachment, so when I'm out with the digital camera, I can transfer pix to the iPod periodically to leave room on the camera's mediastick.
