It's a good thing I use a splatter shield.

On the advice of various nutrition books/sites I decided to switch from "quick 1-minute" oatmeal in the morning to "old-fashioned" oatmeal. Basically the old-fashioned ones are whole oats versus 1-minute, which are oats that have been cut up some so they cook faster. This being the first time I've had whole oats in a while I read the directions, mixed everything together and popped it into the microwave.

Now, with 1-minute oats, the directions are 1.5 to 2 minutes in the microwave and I've found I needed the full 2 minutes to cook the things. So, when the old-fashioned said they took 2.5 to 3 minutes, I put them in for the full three minutes.

That would appear to be a bit long. It's a good thing I use a splatter shield - most of the oatmeal did stay in the bowl, thanks to the cover. And I suppose the microwave did need a cleaning anyway. ;-)

See, When I first read the title, I was sure you were finally getting around to sharing the events of this weekend with everyone.

For one thing, from what you've said to me, a splatter shield would have been handy Sunday afternoon! (*Ha ha* a la the Simpsons)

and by the way, messy Oatmeal doesn't rate a journal entry when everyone is waiting for the details of sexual badmitten tournaments.

Love you, mean it! *mwhah*

Whenever I've tried to cook oatmeal in the microwave (and I always use the old-fashioned stuff), I do it at 50% for 5 minutes. That's what my directions say to do, and I've never seen the 2.5 - 3 min that yours say. But, every single time, they boil over the top of the bowl - oatmeal just makes lots of bubbles, and it overflows, even though the power goes down every so often on 50%.

So I eventually gave up and just cook it on the stove now. It takes the same amount of time on the stove, and you don't have to clean the microwave. I've occasionally had luck with using a large bowl in the microwave (like one of my glass mixing bowls, either the large or the medium), but that's still spotty. And then I've got a huge bowl to wash out. :P
