Cicadas!

I went on a bike ride (finally) this morning in the park. Just going out onto the 5th floor parking lot brought the first evidence of the cicada invasion - the lovely 1950s spaceship-like humming sound. As I approached the park it got ever louder, though never quite deafening.

The strange thing is that I saw a grand total of 2 cicadas and 1 abandoned shell. I'm sure there were more, but I was zipping by on a bike, so didn't have time to identify a lot of stuff like tiny cicadas.

Returned to the apartment to discover the eerie hum had invaded my living space. Even now, with the iPod playing at normal volume on the other side of the room I can hear the hum.

Coolness. :-)

Grin, they are coming out of the woodwork today. 2-3x as many as I saw yesterday. 40+ on my balcony at the moment. The DC ones might just be slower.

This picture (http://home.comcast.net/~slridder/cicadas.JPG) was taken off of my friend Russ' deck last night. They're definitely out there. :O

yick. Those things are disgusting. I remember we used to have them back in El Paso. I thought it was a distant dream that I concocted, because I vividly remember some disgusting insects that would leave their shells perched on the walls, fences, trees, etc. way back when I was a wee lad. I didn't realize that they "rested" for so long. I'm just glad we don't (seem to) get them here in Dallas.
