HOLLINGS SAYS THURMOND IS MENTALLY DIMINISHED BUT SHOULD REMAIN IN SENATE:
Sen. Ernest F. Hollings, D-S.C., said yesterday his 98-year-old GOP Senate colleague, Strom Thurmond, is mentally diminished but should not step down because he has no place else to go. "He doesn't have a home and someone has said the best nursing home is the U.S. Senate," Hollings told The Greenville (S.C.) News. Hollings also said there is a power struggle in
Thurmond's office between staffers aligned with either of two federal judges Thurmond once mentored. Both judges - William Wilkins Jr. and Dennis Shedd - are former top Senate aides to Thurmond. Hollings said Duke Short, Thurmond's chief of staff, largely calls the shots in Thurmond's office. Thurmond is the Senate's oldest and longest-serving member. Genevieve Erny, his spokeswoman, said Thurmond told her there was no need to address Hollings' "off-the-cuff remarks."
