[livejournal.com profile] lioncub and I went to see Hero this afternoon.

Wow.

I mean, Wow.

I almost cried during the red scene when Flying Snow and the Nameless One were fending off the arrows of the Qin army.  Zhang just so outdid himself in this one.

And, to top it off, the actors mostly spoke at a pace and clearly enough that I understood a good part of the movie from them without the subtitles (though I watched those, too - I thought they did a good job with most of the translations).  The one odd one was the translation of "our land," which I found a tad strange.  I can see why this movie wouldn't/didn't go over well in Taiwan, too, with the emphasis on Chinese unity and nationalism. :-)

But, wow.

Wow!

I loeved it. I always prep myself for endings like that, but it never works. It really captured (for me) the essence of how the ultimate sin, the ultimate wrong is to kill the king. (that's where shakespeare failed to me in MacBeth, but whatever) the colors were astounding, the settings were sublime, and if I ever get to meet the idiot who posted his review on IMDB.COM I'll beat him senseless if I have to fight on water to do it.
