Aside from politicking, it's a quiet day today. The wind-down before the holidays, with the attendant absences from the workplace by folks vital to real decisions on issue, is a fun time. Catching up on some reading, and cleaning up my desk as I dump things off of it.

Again no exercise this morning (grrr). Wasn't quite caught up on sleep, and didn't get to bed quite as early as I'd hoped. After someone mentioned it yesterday I downloaded the alpha test of Trillian 3.0. It sucked. I mean, I'm sure the connectivity is better and all that, but there are no new skins for it, so you're stuck either using the default or risking using an existing skin which "won't have as much functionality under the new version." The names of the online users were all about 3 to 4 times larger than they needed to be, with the consequence that I couldn't see my entire list on one screen. When someone chatted with me the taskbar displayed the group name I have them assigned to, not their user name (so what happens if you have three people from the "Livejournal" group, does it show three "Livejournal" boxes on the taskbar? how the hell do you differentiate between them?). The chat boxes gave you one line worth of space in which to type your message, and not a lot more than that to read stuff, with most of the default sized box being taken up by very large, very useless buttons and the other person's too-largely-sized user icon. And don't get me started on the annoying little pings this skin had, Every. Fucking. Time. Someone. Did. Anything.

The interface counts, folks. I don't care what the connectivity is if I can't use the program without getting really, really annoyed every time I open it up.

Tried putting back the Silver XP skin I use as a default, and still the names were three times are large as they needed to be. Oh, and the stupid menu system now mimics the idiotic web-looking thing that Windows XP tries to foist off on folks as its default (the bad default that I always turn off because it's so damned simplistic and stupid). I shouldn't have to click "back" to get back to a main menu. The old menu worked just fine, and you could always see all of the options at once, thankyouverymuch.

And all that was gained in about 2 minutes worth of using it before I shut it off in disgust and went to bed. I think I'll be deleting it and reinstalling 2.013 instead, until they get the bugs fixed. Hopefully they'll get the issue fixed or the program becomes worthless to me. Not that I'll be using it much once I order the iBook later this month, but until then, it's my chat program of choice...

There are a couple all-in-one chat programs out there for Mac, pretty comparable to trillian, but since i don't IM that much i don't really use them. I'd try looking at Versiontracker.com for one, they usually have pretty neat programs for things like chatting and whatnot
