Redid the taxes finally this evening.

If I do not itemize my deductions, I owe the feds ($27) and change, and DC owes me $91.

If I do itemize my deductions, the feds owe me $210, and I end up owing DC ($840).

Hmm, I wonder which way I'll file this year... ;-)

While I haven't found an explicit prohibition on treating the two differently (yet), it was my understanding that you had to do both the same way. Will keep checking to see if I can possible mix them.

The DC web site says you have to do the two the same (both itemized or both not). Ah well. :)

Instead of taking the standard deduction (which is an estimate of what an average taxpayer should be able to deduct), you deduct your actual expenses (charity payments, medical payments, local taxes, etc.).
