I'm hobbling around in an air cast at the moment, which means I fully intend to take advantage of handicapped seating, elevators, etc., because that's why they are there. So that folks who cannot get around quite as easily can minimize some of the difficulty of getting around. They are not there so lazy ass people who are perfectly capable of walking up a set of stairs, or standing on an escalator, or walking a little further into the car or bus and sitting down, can just flop themselves down wherever and take up space. There is a reason for those little "please give priority to the elderly and disabled" signs you see all over the place.

I should not have to ask the overweight woman on the bus to move her bag out of the only available handicapped seat, and her ass from the edge of the same, when I walk on with a cast on. Nor should I have to glare at the 20-something latinas who flop down like the handicapped seating is their god-given right when the rest of the bus is empty. And don't get me started on the young men who do the same - those particularly gall me. If you're going to go sprawl out across multiple seats, do it in the back of the bus across the large bench there, or dump yourself into a regular seat and take up too much room back there. Leave the handicapped seats alone.

And when you see a person hobbling up in a cast, hold the elevator for them. And if it's too full, obey the damned signs and give him or her priority, even if it means your perfectly abled self has to squoosh in further, or, heaven forfend, to wait for the next ride, you lazy shit.
