WASHINGTON -- The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that President Bush overstepped his authority in ordering military war crimes trials for Guantanamo Bay detainees.

Damn. That's big.

Wow. I'm impressed.

And shocked.

I've been reading about this and the accusations that Bush has been fighting to push laws that he has turned around and broken. What is all this going to mean in the end? You're a lawyer and understand this stuff better than I ever will but it seems like the president really doesn't have anything he can't do. It confuses me.

I only find this surprising because the Court is conservative. The book I was editing for the National Institute for Military Justice was on these military commissions, and in my research it seemed that just about everyone outside the Bush Administration thought that the commissions were a terrible idea.

Anything about whether torture was legal, or is that too much to ask?

I agree. This is big. It's a rejection by 5 justices of the administration's attempt to overreach. The leash just got a lot shorter.
