I have one of those cookie presses. They are a pain in the ass to use until you get the hang of it!

Hmm, skip the margarine. If you're gonna do 'em, do 'em with butter. The taste is oh so much better.

Swedish Spritz are my sister's standard. Up here in Scandihovianville, they're quite popular, especially around Christmas.

At least you didn't get the electric cookie guns. I've heard fun stories about them (there ain't no off button). The temperature of the dough makes a big difference in its behavior. But make sure it's butter, and store the cookies in a tin. They mellow just like shortbread.

Damn! No butter? Butter is our favorite seasoning up here in the Northland, along with salt and pepper, practically the only one. I guess sprits and sandbakkelse just wasn't in your food group as a YA.

I would not think that much of the milk sugars remained in butter (India uses clairified butter for a lot of their cooking), but my weak knowledge and years from chemistry probably won't prohibit your tummy from telling you "no" afterwards.

Hmm, I see you're a lawyer, damn, I've never heard of anything bothering a lawyer's stomach before... (g)

If you're having trouble with the gun, try sticking it in the fridge for a few minutes. Also try keeping hands off the main tube as much as possible -- it warms the dough.

I've read that you should refrigerate the dough for ten minutes before putting it in the tube.

It's all about the temperature of the dough, trust me. My mother humours me precisely once per year by making them for me. :)
