Took today off as well as yesterday (because why not?), mostly because if I had Thursday off for a new bed delivery, I might as well have Friday off, too. The husband is out of town, so a free day to do whatever. Unfortunately the day started early with an emergency request for drafting assistance from the Hill, so I worked for an hour or two before I even got breakfast (at one point I wrote the phrase, 'bear with me, but I'm doing math before I've had enough coffee' or something to that effect). I eventually got over the annoyed-ness of it and got on with my day.

Decided to do a run to BJ's Warehouse for gasoline and sundries. At some point I started griping to myself about how annoying it was going to be with all the last minute weekend people, and was I going to run into a post-church crowd when I finally remembered it was Friday and not Sunday. Yes, it's been a long week.

The husband's flight from Texas was delayed because apparently there's a pothole on one of the runways at National airport, so they're down to one, and will have to circle before they can land, so they took on some extra fuel for that before they finally left. They're scheduled to get in a little after midnight, so hopefully it won't be much later than that, since I'm being nice and staying up to go pick him up with my fresh tank of gas.

Did the weekly comic book run this afternoon with the husband. Stopped at McDonalds for fine dining in the car from the drive through (we get the food from the window then pull into the parking lot to eat). And, in exciting financial nerdness, I saved $1 a gallon at the Safeway gas station. Thank you for tracking my spending habits, Safeway (which you were going to do anyway since I always use the same credit card, so whatever).

Returned home and did a little more work (thank you, flexible pandemic work hours). I swear, it is going to be the death of me to break this agency of talking about getting "approvals" from Legislative branch committees, even in internal communications, but definitely in formal external communications. Long story short, under the US Constitution the Legislative branch has one way to "direct" or "approve" of Executive branch actions, and that's to pass legislation (with the assent or over the objections of the Executive). That's it, period. Every thing else is informal and small-p political. Mind you, it would be dumb (like, massively stoopid) for an agency to ignore or disregard Congress (or individual committees or members), but in the dance of things an Executive branch agency should never surrender their Constitutional role to execute the laws, especially in formal communications. It is fine to consult with Congress, it is fine to take their views under advisement, but they don't get to execute the laws, we do. If they want to run things, they can get a political appointment from the President. Otherwise, no. Just no.

This, as you might be able to tell, drives me up the wall when I run into it inside the agency, and will lead to a long, angry (lawyer-splaining!) lecture if I find it in formal, external communications.

So yeah, all that 'separation of powers' stuff you learned about in school? It's real stuff that gets argued about every day. Whee.

I had to go buy a new dishwasher for the old apartment, because after we moved out but before it was listed the damned thing that was in there died. It was on its last leg, but I was hoping it would stay up until the place sold. Ah well, cheap-o dishwasher replacement it is. Now if the place would just effing sell already, as I would like to have only one mortgage, thankyouverymuch.

Still trying to get used to cooking on gas. I think the last time I cooked with gas was when I was an undergraduate, sometime late in the previous century. So trying to match burner sizes with pots has been a challenge (there are four burners plus a center griddle, and the burners are all different sizes, from 'small' to 'extra large'). Medium and large seem to be my go-tos at the moment, which is kind of obnoxious because they're both on one side of the stove (small to extra large, going counter clockwise, starting at 2:00, to 10, to 6, to 4, so they're both on the left side). I think I will look at a one of the fancier ones with multiple rings of flame when this one dies - it just seems like a waste of heat when it all just hits the outside of the bottom of the pan (unlike electric, which heated the whole bottom of the pan, albeit more slowly).

But at least we've (mostly) mastered cooking without the fire alarm going off. ;)

The white drapes the previous owners left in my office are a delightful magnet for black cat hair (he typed, while being nudged by said black cat for not paying attention to him).

Managed to haul out my knitting for the first time since we moved, and powered through a couple sets of the pattern (I'm supposed to do something like 16 sets of 16 rows for this scarf, and I'm on set 7, row 6 as of last night - I was at set 4 row 12 before this week). I might actually get it done before it gets cold enough to wear it. Maybe.
