The husband and I finally went by our newly renovated and reopened local library and got library cards. Not the largest library, but it was well laid out, bright, and seemed well trafficked at 5-something on a Tuesday evening. I asked about our local Friends of the Library group, because their web site hasn't been updated since 2017, and the folks on duty weren't terribly sure what's going on with them as they haven't been in touch with them in a while (which immediately made me internally ask whether they'd checked obituaries, but I refrained [barely] from saying that out loud). I left my contact number for them, and I'm going to reach out to someone with the library system about it. My mother is a retired junior high librarian (I refuse to say 'middle school' as I loathe that term with every fiber of my being), and I helped digitize three different libraries back in the 80s. My husband will confirm that I cannot help myself from reading shelves and refiling books (I did it yesterday on pure instinct!). So I may see if we can revive the Friends group, or at least find out what's going on with them.
