Power woes

Our power went out for a little while yesterday afternoon, and it apparently got a good distance around us, because my dental office was also hit. Had an 'every-six-months' appointment this morning, and they were still having problems getting into the computers. Thankfully all I needed or wanted was a cleaning, and that didn't require a computer. All good on that front, and I'll call them next week to schedule the next appointment and deal with billing.

I was a little worried I was going to have to go into the office today, because the power cord on my work laptop didn't seem to be charging it after the power outage. I was all set to try a couple different things and then make the drive in, but after sitting powered down all night it was drawing power just fine this morning, post-dentist. Thank heavens. The Metro is current closed down at the office, so it would've meant a drive one way or another.

In the meantime, it's Apple systems update day, so I've been updating all of my devices, and getting the husband's computers for good measure while he's at work. Much easier to do during the day at home than waiting until everyone is trying to do it when they get home from work.

Routines

My normal morning routine is to get up, wander downstairs, make coffee in the Keurig and take my daily medications (allergies, reflux, vitamin D since I’m a home body who never gets sunlight), do some mobility work (shoulder spin up, 27 squats), then wander back upstairs, plug in various devices (phone, watch), open the laptop to read comics, sip coffee, etc. That’s a fair approximation of most mornings. This morning I disrupted that by making oven bacon and French press coffee. Almost forgot to take my drugs because it threw me off my rhythm. But both the coffee and the bacon were worth it.

Tried putting the bacon on two aluminum baking sheets, one on the lowest rack, in the cold oven, then setting it to 425. Once it hit 425, timer for 12 minutes, and done. The lower rack made very crisp bacon as the husband likes it, and the upper one was slightly softer like I prefer. I think we may have a winner. And of course it produced nice clean bacon fat to pour off for later cooking.

Decided this was the year to upgrade our various i-devices, so we’ve both gotten new iPads (a mini, in my case - I like the smaller size for caring around the house), and we picked up watches yesterday (walked into the Apple store and basically asked what models they had in stock; thankfully the red & green ones they had matched our favorite colors). Waiting to order phones for another week or two to make sure they don’t arrive while we’re out of town for Thanksgiving. We’ve skipped several generations of updates in each of these, so it was time. Expensive, but fun to have new toys to play with. I’m still getting used to the pen with the iPad, and I think I’m coming down on the side of “nice, but totally unnecessary”.

So my small gubm'nt agency is doing a 'practice' telework day on Friday, to make sure the IT networks can handle pretty much the entire agency trying to get online. I'm not a fan of telework, for me, so I'm not looking forward to the inevitable 'stay at home for the duration' order. Blech. And if the husband has to do so as well? We'll drive each other nuts.

I did go buy myself some fancy apple airbud pros with the noise cancelling stuff after work today. They worked really well on the street and the bus on the way home. Couldn't even hear two guys talking to one another with the noise cancelling on. So maybe those will help us not to drive each other crazy in a tiny one bedroom apartment. I don't think the cats will know what to do with us, either.

Otherwise life is fairly normal.

To my Mac using friends:

Other than mailing a photo, is there some way to change the size of photos in iPhoto 4? As in, cut down the pixels, etc., as if one were getting a photo ready to upload to LJ as an icon or the like.

I cannot seem to find a way to do it in version 4 and I'm trying to wait until I upgrade ye olde computer next to upgrade to the latest version of iPhoto. When I email photos it'll take them down to a size, but that seems cumbersome. Any way to alter them right in iPhoto itself? Thanks!
