Power woes

Our power went out for a little while yesterday afternoon, and it apparently got a good distance around us, because my dental office was also hit. Had an 'every-six-months' appointment this morning, and they were still having problems getting into the computers. Thankfully all I needed or wanted was a cleaning, and that didn't require a computer. All good on that front, and I'll call them next week to schedule the next appointment and deal with billing.

I was a little worried I was going to have to go into the office today, because the power cord on my work laptop didn't seem to be charging it after the power outage. I was all set to try a couple different things and then make the drive in, but after sitting powered down all night it was drawing power just fine this morning, post-dentist. Thank heavens. The Metro is current closed down at the office, so it would've meant a drive one way or another.

In the meantime, it's Apple systems update day, so I've been updating all of my devices, and getting the husband's computers for good measure while he's at work. Much easier to do during the day at home than waiting until everyone is trying to do it when they get home from work.

After much drama with my provider, I finally got ahold of them and got them to update PHP and what not behind the scenes, so my countfour sites are back up and in business with the latest version of WordPress. I always cross-posted things, so no worries on having to check multiple sites, I had just let C4 slide because I couldn't get them to update it, probably because of overactive spam filters. A message directly through their support site (versus an email) finally worked. Yay technology.

Just went through a power hiccup here for about an hour. I think that's the longest outage we've had since we moved here. It's newer (2010) construction with buried lines, so we're fairly insulated from storms and the like (*knock wood*), unlike the pole-wired neighborhoods around us. So that was a trip, and got me out of a couple meetings. Though I may have to go to the office tomorrow - the work laptop is no longer charging, and reboots and other plugs aren't doing the trick, so the power brick may be fried. Whee!

I think I've finally decided to hang up my memberships in USA Triathlon and the DC Tri Club. I haven't raced since 2012, I have no plans to get back into race shape since I can barely keep up with a minimal running schedule without injury, and it's just not worth the constant reminders that I'm not racing. So when these expire at the end of the year it's time to hang them up for now and not renew. And keep searching for the exercise that I want to do now. Did get in a nice bodyweight workout while the power was out, that my arms will be paying for tomorrow.

I don't think the previous owners of this townhouse knew the meaning of the words "preventative maintenance". At least not based on all the hair and gunk we've cleaned out of the various sink and shower traps (ewww), and the water staining I've scrubbed off the nozzle of the kitchen faucet. And now, on the amount of lint in the dryer vent. The dryer has always run slow, and we've said we were going to replace it once the cult co-op sold (which it still hasn't done *sigh*), but after cleaning as much of the inside of the vent next to the dryer as well as we could and seeing how much lint was in there, we finally called a company to have them come do the whole vent to the outside (which vents outside near the top of the third story), which they're scheduled to do tomorrow. Am betting the dryer will magically work properly, or closer to properly, once it can vent like it's supposed to. Because there's probably 11 years of lint in the line that's blocking the exhaust from getting out. Just like the hair clogged the sinks.

Kids, maintain your shit. It'll work better if you do.

Other than that, we got new sliding blinds for the upstairs loft room off the husband's office. The cleaning person killed the slider on the vertical blinds that the husband hated, so we used that as an excuse to get something he'd prefer. Those got installed today and they look much, much better. Tomorrow will be the acid test when the morning sun is hitting them, but since we already had window film put on those sliding glass doors, I think it'll be fine.

In the meantime I got a robo call from the power company that tomorrow is a peak savings day; if we reduce our electricity use we get credits on the bill for helping them manage demand. So we may take off early tomorrow, close up all the shades, unplug a bunch of electronics, set the thermostats to "away", and wander out into the world. And see if that gets us any credits with the power company. If nothing else it's a good excuse to get out of the house.

Got to play some Animal Crossing tonight with the nieces on both sides of the family. There was a shooting star event on my island, so I invited all the girls over to wish on the stars and get DIY recipes from the giant space chicken Celeste. They seemed to have fun with it, as they usually do when I open up for online play. And I certainly enjoyed "seeing" them in the game.

Swearing

I have not always watched the transition of power in the US. If I recall correctly I was on my bike on a trainer on my balcony for Obama's first (and could hear the noise from the crowd at the Mall). I went to Boston for W's second (first time visiting that city, and it was coooooold). And I certainly ignored the last guy's. But this year I felt the need to watch the entire flippin' thing, to make sure I saw that it happened, and see the tone the new boss was going to set for the next four years. I was not disappointed.

It's going to be a busy next few months, as we in the civil service figure out what the new boss is going to undo, what he's going to keep, and what new things he's going to bring. But it'll be better than the last guy, and that's what's important.
